Recent research by the Irish Cancer Society has revealed that many people believe that sun protection isn’t necessary when in Ireland – but that couldn’t be further from the truth! Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Ireland, with over 11,000 new cases diagnosed every year. Do you know how to check your skin for signs of cancer? Jennifer talks to Dr Justine Jordan, a GP and member of The Skin Nerd Health & Wellness Panel about the signs of skin cancer that you should be aware of. Dr Justine explains that along with melanomas and itchy patches of skin, we need to look out for crusty skin around the ears which doesn’t go away. This could be innocent or potentially squamous cell carcinomas. Pearly pink marks with scales around them on sun exposed areas of the face could signal a basal cell carcinoma. This Wellness Wednesday, we talked to Fabulous Pharmacist and member of The Skin Nerd Health & Wellness Panel, Laura Dowling about the optimal time to take nutritional supplements and how to stay consistent. FabU Supplements founder Laura explains that making it part of your daily routine is essential, suggesting setting an alarm or storing your supplements somewhere you will see them daily as a reminder. Laura continues by discussing how results can take time to be felt and seen – but that doesn’t mean they are not working their magic! Laura suggests giving a supplement 3-5 weeks before expecting to see a difference with a bit longer (5-6 weeks minimum) for a skin supplement as this accounts for the length of the skin cycle. Nerdie fact of the day: Carbon dioxide is actually beneficial to your breathing biochemistry! It’s Wellness Wednesday and today, Jennifer is back with Milena Jaksic, Movement and Breathwork Coach (platinumpilates.ie) to discuss the fascinating topic of breathing biochemistry! While many of us are unaware of the significance of carbon dioxide to our health, Milena explains that it’s super important when it comes to keeping us healthy and energised! How much carbon dioxide your body can tolerate will determine the speed and the rate at which you breathe. One of the key things to understand is that when oxygen comes into the lungs and blood, it is carried around on hemoglobin. This carries the oxygen around to the blood. Carbon dioxide is basically the key that releases oxygen from hemoglobin – it breaks the bonds. Milena explains that you could have a 98% blood oxygen saturation level and still feel really fatigued and stressed because you are not actually getting the oxygen into the cell where it is required to create energy. So, what we want to try to do is, actually develop our resilience to carbon dioxide, so we can slow down our breathing to get more oxygen into the cells.
