Nerdie fact of the day: Carbon dioxide is actually beneficial to your breathing biochemistry! It’s Wellness Wednesday and today, Jennifer is back with Milena Jaksic, Movement and Breathwork Coach (platinumpilates.ie) to discuss the fascinating topic of breathing biochemistry! While many of us are unaware of the significance of carbon dioxide to our health, Milena explains that it’s super important when it comes to keeping us healthy and energised! How much carbon dioxide your body can tolerate will determine the speed and the rate at which you breathe. One of the key things to understand is that when oxygen comes into the lungs and blood, it is carried around on hemoglobin. This carries the oxygen around to the blood. Carbon dioxide is basically the key that releases oxygen from hemoglobin – it breaks the bonds. Milena explains that you could have a 98% blood oxygen saturation level and still feel really fatigued and stressed because you are not actually getting the oxygen into the cell where it is required to create energy. So, what we want to try to do is, actually develop our resilience to carbon dioxide, so we can slow down our breathing to get more oxygen into the cells.
