How often do you consider your bone health? This Wellness Wednesday, we learn that it’s never too early to begin thinking about it! Today, Jennifer talks to Dr Deirdre Fitzgerald (fitzgeraldprivateclinic.com) about the things we can do to improve and maintain the health of our bones. Dr Deirdre, who is a Consultant Surgeon and Aesthetic Medical Doctor, suggests that you make sure you are getting enough calcium, you need to make sure that you can absorb it, that you have adequate vitamin D coming in through your diet or supplements. If there is a need to, you could also request a DEXA scan from your GP, which would show whether your bony stock is good and whether or not you are osteopenic or osteoporotic. Another time to look at your bone health is during menopause. HRT has a very good role in helping bone to be maintained during this time. From a facial perspective, be friends with your dentist. Your teeth will help you to maintain your face for a long time. If you do lose teeth and it’s within your means, you could look at getting a dental implant. All in all, diet, common sense and dental hygiene have a big part to play in keeping our bones healthy – and the earlier you start to develop good habits in these areas, the better! Recent research by the Irish Cancer Society has revealed that many people believe that sun protection isn’t necessary when in Ireland – but that couldn’t be further from the truth! Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Ireland, with over 11,000 new cases diagnosed every year. As it’s been found that 86% of melanomas are preventable by protecting your skin from harmful rays, it’s vital to protect your skin with the daily use of SPF. The sun protection market is vast, but the most important things to consider when choosing a sunscreen is to make sure it is: High factor – at least SPF30 but we recommend SPF50 Broad Spectrum – protecting from UVA and UVB rays One you love to apply – because you need to reapply it every 2 hours during the day! Usage per application: For the average adult you will need 35mls of sunscreen to cover the whole body. We recommend using a measure of half a teaspoon of sunscreen to cover each arm, the face, neck and ears. Use a measure of one teaspoon for each leg, the front and the back of the body. Do you know how to check your skin for signs of cancer? Jennifer talks to Dr Justine Jordan, a GP and member of The Skin Nerd Health & Wellness Panel about the signs of skin cancer that you should be aware of. Dr Justine explains that along with melanomas and itchy patches of skin, we need to look out for crusty skin around the ears which doesn’t go away. This could be innocent or potentially squamous cell carcinomas. Pearly pink marks with scales around them on sun exposed areas of the face could signal a basal cell carcinoma.
