What’s a phrase you think would be cool or powerful animated alongside mr Skelly? Anything helps I am all ears! If I can be vulnerable for a moment, the last couple of weeks have been amazing for so many reasons and difficult for others. The difficult ones seem to stick like a thorn in my side despite their ultimate insignificance but I cannot deny their impact on me and my art. I have been stolen from a lot. And I don’t mean just accounts using AI to remove my quotes, make their own and go viral, the people selling knock off versions of my work on websites or trying to scam good people into NFT projects. It’s the people who just don’t care about integrity in an ever breaking world. All sense of respect feels lost and it can be grim. I understand this is the nature of art, social media, the modern age, and to many I should be flattered. But it steals creativity from my soul, draining me of genuine inspiration. Not always, but so much of it stacks up and I feel disheartened. People using this character to promote ideals and values I never would. The closeness I have to this art work is something I consider quite sacred and it’s always a fight to see it bastardised so. Ahh well I have been blessed and those things will continue to happen and fade to time. It’s just honestly so eye opening to see that lack of respect is not a cultural issue but a worldwide one haha I suppose it’s a human trait - everyone’s doing what they can to survive how best they know, even at the cost of others. I won’t stop trying my best. But sometimes when the emotional toll takes hold, it gets in the way of my ability to soak up new ideas. This illustration is from one of the pages of my new book! The Unexpected life of Mr Skelly! The words are their own thing, (separate to the book!) but a s I’ve been flat out with finishing the layouts of the book, other branding projects and some future collaborations I haven’t had the time to crush out new animations! So I used the key framing method along with a little bit of parallax movement to create this 120 FPS 4k animation haha which is 10x our normal frame rate. I prefer doing it slower really, but this was an interesting attempt given this is a landscape format background. I designed this in procreate, animated in Dreams on the iPad Pro using only built in brushes. — The quote itself is one of pretty special significance in my own life, some might laugh and say “YEAH IT WONT HURT WHEN IM DEAD!” And there’s always that perspective haha but it certainly helps to know that time as a distance is quite a powerful tool. What a blessed life. The odds of you being alive are astronomical, and it’s not for nothing. There’s an interesting dichotomy in my body of followers here at 1924us, some who feel so much pain, and others who feel so much joy, often they are just a sliver away from feeling the other, but both do tremendous jobs holding on to their current position. To the hurting, joy seems fake and bitter, the the joyful, pain seems silly and a spectacle. Both have their case, but both are needed in this world. However if we allow the certainty of either to define us in our entirety we become calcified and unable, or unwilling to hear those who might differ from us. So I wrote this as an approach to both of those perspectives, through hardship joy blossoms, and in joy we can recognize great tragedy. I made a design a while back that says “never lucky, always blessed” because often times we equate randomness to our lives. For me, I feel there is something much greater at work here than I can ever understand, and the coincidences are not lost on me as randomly generated moments. I’m 33 now, and I can remember exactly being 13, and being so stressed about how I could ever afford a home, or even go to college, I was overwhelmed with stress and anxiety. I carried that with me well into my early 20’s going through unimaginable strain, and I look back in anguish and wince how I could ever complain in such a good life. But still, our feelings are what they are - even when they’re wrong. The ability to feel is what makes us human, and what gives us humanity is how we act on them. I am feeling so incredibly blessed today, I feel a deep joy I have never known before. I hope very much all of you can reach it, even if it doesn’t last for a single one of us. Venture Onward. Mr Skelly first came to fruition several years ago, but in the last two years there has been an unparalleled impact of his creation in my life. I have always been hard on myself, and taken life a bit too seriously. Chalk that up to a rougher upbringing and needing to survive. It’s made me stubborn and unwilling to change. I read something that, to paraphrase, basically said: “the greatest threat to any of us, is the perception of ourselves we assume others must have, good or bad. In action - according to this false perception - we build entire lives on false premises, denying ourselves the right to play, to be wrong. We do this out of a well-intended, but misguided, need to be a part of a community, we think therefore we act. In truth, the community is lost. The imagination of the self is so great, skewed as it may be, it overpowers any reality, skewed as that may be, and we are left alone only with a version of ourselves we do not recognise.” An authentic life means a vulnerable one. And yet I have intentionally curated the last several years of my life to great scrutiny. Dark, neutral, grainy images, stoicism, emotion, activism, outspokenness and art. And in the last two years I have been brought to my stripped back roots, the actual skeleton of what this brand is to be a journeyman, to be imperfect and learning. Well, now my feed is filled with color, and quotes at times cringey as they may be, that inspire and move me. And I hope they are a legacy for my children to remember, that playfulness is what keeps us human, and all of the things that get in the way of that: ego, identity, surviving, preservation, all have beautiful purposes, but ultimately they strip from us what we all need desperately, that is, to be wrong, to try, to fail, to have fun and to play. There is no innovation without risk, I am grateful I didn’t stay the course and continue only to highly curate what I believed to be best, but allowed something new to spring up. I am thankful for the opportunity to create for so many of you, but moreso, am just happy to be playing everyday I make a Mr Skelly drawing. The child is who you are, the adult is the person who forgets that. I left home when I was 14, a story some of you may know. It was not an easy decision, but I knew that it needed to be done for the child I was trying to protect: me. It feels weird to look back and imagine myself feeling such a sense of responsibility. It had its great value, and its great tragic impact as well. I animated this using my son as a reference. And it was hard not to imagine the generations to come, and those before, and how all of us are just children who rise up out of many different, strange soils. We are flowering. What fruit you bear is up to you, but remember that the child inside of you is watching ever on at your every action: are you the hero you hoped you would be? If you aren’t, there’s always time to correct course. It’s easy to become jaded by a broken world, but you can stop the chain. Everything we do everyday is for them. Young me would be overwhelmed that my kindergarten teacher was right: I am an artist. And everyday I hope in some small way that my work continues to impact people in a way that might inspire great change. And now the kid in me, is best friends with my own children, people I deeply respect and cherish. I hope you enjoy little child Skelly. Our book is nearly finished as well and printing won’t take too long after that!!! I have to tell you all something. Since the creation of Mr Skelly, one of the biggest blessings in my life has been one of the hardest: the impact on so many of you. I have received hundreds of messages of grief and loss. Friends who lost friends, mothers who lost sons to suicide, brothers who lost sisters to cancer, children who lost parents to time, parents who lost children to accidents, and in amongst that deep and traumatising grief people have sprung up like flowers of hope and told me their stories. The power of the human spirit never ceases to amaze me. So! Why this message? Stop looking for reasons to quit. YOU ARE NEEDED IN THIS LIFE. Life is HARD ENOUGH ON ITS OWN! You don’t need to help it along the way in beating ya down! It’s so easy to get caught up in the fray and forget how important you are. “Christian, I’m not important” I used to think like that, and I’ll admit it first I still have my days. I’ve battled addiction, self hatred, suicide ideation, and all sorts of problems and all of these things haunt me. If you ever feel like giving in, imagine what giving your all feels like! Take the risks! Push yourself, if you’ve got nothing to lose you’ve got EVERYTHING to gain! You are worthwhile and valuable and your impact on this world, however big or small will echo forever and you can choose how you’re a part of the lives ahead! I love y’all, truly from the depths of my heart. I’m not a perfect person, I’m a broken man redeemed and I feel undeserving of every good thing in my life. Hey all! Just absolutely taking a slow-down this weekend as I hang out with some friends, recharge m’batteries and gather inspiration for new ideas! I hope y’all are well! Also, does anyone else struggle to sleep in no matter what? I’m currently away from my family, with every ability to actually sleep in and get some shut eye but my body is just like “nah… you need to wake up now” hahaha. There is no warm up time for me either I’m like at level 100 first thing in the morning, no matter what I do! Ah well, it is important to rest and that can look different to all of us. A different share for me! But one that is nonetheless true to the core of our brand here at 1924us! To be as upfront with you all as possible I love to share about finances and the “reality” of small businesses. Now to some, we might be considered a large business due to the size of our social media alone, but we’ve got three employees, myself, my wife Elle and Max our legend. Some might assume that having millions of followers means having millions of dollars or equal worth of opportunity with large businesses, brand deals, etc but that’s just not the reality I’ve found. In saying all that, we do quite alright in our online shop and design studio and always have a consistent flow of orders and projects that keep us alive and well and for that we’re eternally grateful! DISCLAIMER: this is not a complaint about my current predicament haha but more of a showcase of the reality that is content creation in the modern world.
