How do you choose to embrace the things that happen to you? I’m not saying that every difficult thing needs to bet with a high five and a smile, but how we react can make a whole hell of a difference… One of my friends died when he was just 27, I was 23 at the time, it was 10 years ago, and I’m older than he ever got to be. I remember at his funeral his parents overcome with joy. And I was angry. I was so, so very angry. They were joyful. And he was dead. But they were joyful for the time they got with him, to be there when he took his first steps, to see him overcome battles not many knew. He was a broken child, and things were no doubt far from perfect. And I look back and see what it means to do your best to see through every ounce of pain, and search in a world of seemingly unending sorrow - for good. For the things worth praising. For the joy often forgotten even in the shipwrecks of our lives. “No man should ever have to bury their child” they said, “but what a blessing we get to” as a parent now I cannot fathom the level of inner strength it takes to be there for the person you love most in this world, when they are no longer there to react to it. Love is selfless and life can be a test on our humanity, but the spirit endures. Suffering is not meant to last forever, neither is goodness, but we can choose how we react to both in any given moment, we choose to be many things. All of us are dying, that’s indisputable. You know that feeling where you want to make a move but you feel stuck? It’s like buyers-choice paralysis. You walk down the grocery store and there’s so many brands for the same product and you’re like “what do I even choose!?” I feel that way especially when I’m sick, I go in-between this unreal level of guilt that I’m not doing enough and need to work harder, and this obvious practicality that I need to rest. The world no doubt shouts “rest!!” But the internal drive feels stuck. I buy into impostor syndrome and the fear that, if I’m not working harder at my ambitions right now, someone else is. That drive is a good thing but it’s pretty crippling to be around, just ask my wife haha. I laugh, but it has been such a hard point of contention in our lives. The innate drive to do well and succeed often overshadows the desire to just be, to be present, to slow down. I write so many of these messages for that side of me, from the other side: “you’ll be dead soon, how do you want to remember the moments you spent?” Do I have the time to even be present? Ahh but life is a beautiful gift and I’m filled with gratitude, to even be plagued with such problems is the sign of a good life. Today as I finish the last legs my sickness seems to be on, I can’t help but think about all these things. Take help when you can, take rest when you must. Hello all! I’m recovering from a pretty gnarly flu, my body is beat but I think it’s because I’ve overdone the last 8 months of my life haha it’s finally all caught up! I’m enjoying resting because I’m finally forced to. I’m sorry for not creating more Mr Skelly art lately, I’ve been hard at work on the management side, getting books shipped out, finishing branding projects and taking on some new responsibilities with the family! I’m still resting today but plan on having NEW animations for y’all this week. I was able to quite quickly restock the book! It’s already in production after the last batch shipped out! How blessed am I that some things didn’t work out. That the relationship I thought was certain, wasn’t so that the one that was meant for me could find me. That the job I didn’t get, lead me to new opportunities somewhere else. Before I made this post I was going though the early stages of overcoming a difficult fight with inner peace, and working to understand who I was when I wasn’t always fighting to survive, on the edge of my nervous system. It lead to more thoughts, more work time and more Mr Skelly creations, it inspired me to make a book, that is now sold out!! Things not working out, made room for all the things that were meant to. I cannot believe it. As I sit here in the emptiness of my shop I feel so full tonight. It’s nearly 10pm and I’m still packing books, hundreds and hundreds of books. I am trying to write notes where I can at random, to sign a few copies, to throw in a few goods here and there, and I just feel so much gratitude washing over me. It comes in these big waves and I have to stop and think back to when Mr Skelly was born and how he was fleshed out (pun intended). It all feels so surreal and yet you all have helped to make it a reality! I can’t believe it’s been a year since I made this animation, I feel like when I initially drew it I spent so long, and now I look back and see so many more imperfections. It’s amazing what we learn with time as people. I was thinking of what it’s like growing up, growing older, and realizing how little I know even as I learn more. All of life becomes so much more nuanced, so many simple things become so complex, ideas you’re so certain of become vaguer, more elusive. You become so much more steadfast in the things you’re unsure of and that’s special, and being with people during that, friends, family, loved ones, even strangers who offer you kindness, grace, as you learn, grow and adapt… what a gift that is.
