Teinture Sauvage is the wild-hearted creation of Céline Philippe, a former lawyer who swapped city suits for muddy boots and a dye pot in rural France
Teinture Sauvage is the wild-hearted creation of Céline Philippe, a former lawyer who swapped city suits for muddy boots and a dye pot in rural France. She conjures rich, seasonal colours for fabrics - all from plants and homegrown mordants. We hope you enjoy this extract from the article 'WILD DYEING', featured in Issue 124, Rural: Philippe trained at Lainamac textile training centre to learn from master dyers Michel Garcia and Magali Bontoux and experimented in her garden whenever she could. Launched in 2018, Teinture Sauvage advocates for the use of plants as mordants in natural dyeing. With Philippe’s keen eye for colour, the results are stunning. Philippe is a purist. From the start, she knew she wanted to use bio-mordants instead of conventional metal salts. At her country home in the Beaujolais region, she nurtures biodiversity by sowing plants or keeping spontaneous plants that benefit the ecosystem and her craft. Birch’s bark and oak, chestnut, rosemary, rhubarb, and black locust leaves from the garden are used for mordanting. For large quantities of fibres, she uses extracts or powdered bark from the symplocos tree, a natural mordant suitable for animal and plant fibres. To get the colour she wants, it’s all about planning ahead... Words by @annelaurecamilleri - @teinturesauvage As well as the article featured in Issue 124, you can learn more about natural dyeing in Céline's new book 'Wild Dyeing: From the Garden to Color. It is available now in English from @rizzolibooks, in French from @editionshoebeke, and in German from @stiebnerverlag. - #WildDyeing #TeintureSauvage #NaturalDye #PlantBasedColor #BioMordants #SlowCraft #FromGardenToColor #SustainableTextiles #DyePlants #SeasonalColor #TextileAlchemy #VegetableDyes #PlatDyed #NaturalColour #NaturalDyeRevolution #CraftWithNature #EcoDyer #BackToTheLand #TextileBooks #DyeGarden #RuralCreativity #SelvedgeMagazine

PAPER TRAIL: The Paper Foundation

Swipe through — or shall we say, turn the page
PAPER TRAIL: The Paper Foundation Swipe through — or shall we say, turn the page? In a converted mill in Cumbria, just three craftspeople are safeguarding the ancient art of handmade paper. Welcome to The Paper Foundation, where shredded rags become sheets so refined that they’re trusted by Royalty, the Vatican, the Smithsonian, and rare book restorers worldwide. Founded in 2020 by Mark Cropper - a sixth-generation papermaker - this small but mighty team produces around 20,000 sheets a year using traditional methods, textile waste, and a deep respect for material integrity. Tom Frith-Powell, the mill’s first employee, learned the craft alone during lockdown, honing his technique sheet by sheet. “Each one is a moment of creation,” he says. “You get two or three seconds to get it right before the water drains away.” Today, The Paper Foundation turns old denim into notebooks, hotel bedsheets into postcards, and discarded rags into conservation-grade paper, proving that sustainability and beauty can go hand in hand. At Selvedge, paper is never just the background - it’s the very foundation of our publication. We admire the precision, patience, and imagination that goes into every sheet, and know just how much these details matter. The British countryside comes alive in Mark Hearld’s hands: foxes slink through brambles, birds peck among sharp-etched branches, and porcupines bristle with playful menace
The British countryside comes alive in Mark Hearld’s hands: foxes slink through brambles, birds peck among sharp-etched branches, and porcupines bristle with playful menace. Drawing on the unruly spirit of Grimms’ fairy tales, Hearld’s work crackles with life. His prints and paper-cuts are bold, imperfect, and unapologetically hand-wrought. “The opposite of polite,” he calls them: “strong, bold, and full of life.” Hearld’s most recent collaboration sees his vibrant paper-cut patterns take on new movement, leaping onto textiles for Zanini and ARTS & SCIENCE's Autumn/Winter 2024 collection. Working with Japanese artisans in Kyoto, each piece was hand-printed in rich indigo, the deep blues amplifying the “lyrical, unexpected movement” that Hearld loves. A keen student of British mid-century greats like Enid Marx and Peggy Angus (whose work is also featured on the wrapper for the issue in which he features), Hearld channels their spirit into something wholly his own in a celebration of the wild, the lyrical, and the universal rhythms of nature that speak to us all. Look out for the third edition of his book Raucous Invention, coming this June, and a feature on Mark Hearld in Issue 124, Rural. @mark_hearld @zaninicollection @arts_and_science #SelvedgeMagazine #MarkHearld #HandPrinted #Artisans #RepeatDesign #RepeatPattern #PrintDesign #TextilePrinting #PaperPrinting #PaperCutouts #PaperCuts #ArtsandScience #RaucousInvention #HandmadeStories #BritishCraft #IndigoDreams #NatureInspires #Zanini #DesignBooks #ArtBooks #ArtisanMakers #BlockPrinted Image Credits: 1/ Mark Hearld by @aluncallenderphoto 2/ Mark Herald x ZANNI with ARTS & SCIENCE back-gather dress, block-printed, ZA collection 2024. Featuring the historical sailmaker, Sarah Liscoe, Selvedge dives into one of the oldest crafts in the maritime world: sailmaking
Featuring the historical sailmaker, Sarah Liscoe, Selvedge dives into one of the oldest crafts in the maritime world: sailmaking. Enjoy this extract from SAILING BY: Sailcloth and Sail Making. Featured in Issue 124, Rural: Looking back through time, it is difficult to have any certainty about when humans’ first use of sails appeared, as their very nature meant that the Earth has reclaimed them. Archaeological digs have unearthed many hull construction methods, and the primary source of evidence of types and materials used are taken from drawings, models, engravings, or writings. It is a testament to the fact that natural fibres degrade and have no long-term impact on the planet. Over thousands of years, fishing nets, sails, ropes, and maritime clothing have returned to the soil; whilst this creates work both in manufacturing and care as the overriding principle, the increased work which would be done on a local scale also increases the sense of community which has gradually been lost throughout the world... SWEEP IT UNDER THE RUG: Restoring Carpets in Wales

From tales of filched rugs to the secrets stitched into 19th-century Senneh motifs, Bamford’s world is one of obsession, artistry, and sheer, enduring beauty
SWEEP IT UNDER THE RUG: Restoring Carpets in Wales From tales of filched rugs to the secrets stitched into 19th-century Senneh motifs, Bamford’s world is one of obsession, artistry, and sheer, enduring beauty. Hidden down a quiet road in Presteigne, Wales, David Bamford Carpets looks like a simple barn from the outside - but step through the doors and you’re met with a kaleidoscope of antique Gaziantep rugs and Afghan kilims, jostling for space with Bamford’s own creations that reinterpret 17th and 18th century textiles with astonishing artistry. Bamford's devotion to craftsmanship runs deep. In the 1970s, after noticing historic carpets returning for repeated repairs, he proposed a radical idea to the National Trust: why not recreate them instead? The result? Decades of work designing and weaving new carpets for Britain’s great estates. At the heart of it all is a quiet environmental revolution. In Bamford’s workshops in Bulgaria, wool is bought from local farmers, spun by hand, and dyed using a 200-year-old sealed pot eco-dye system so sustainable it caught the eye of the United Nations. Every new project begins where Bamford is happiest: at a large desk beneath a skylight in his Welsh colouring studio. Here, surrounded by books and towers of dyed wool, he draws, dreams, and sifts through more than 6,000 carefully catalogued dye recipes. He blends hues, matches centuries-old designs, and conjures up new creations from thread and imagination. In a cottage between Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, Luke Edward Hall spins stories from bright skeins of wool
In a cottage between Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, Luke Edward Hall spins stories from bright skeins of wool. Here, among tangled gardens and misty fields, Chateau Orlando was born: a daydream in knitwear, where old country houses creak with myths, and Pan himself might whistle from the hedgerow. Founded in 2022, Hall’s label is a love letter to flower-crammed parlours, to ancient gods lounging in meadows, to the wildness beneath neatly clipped lawns. Trained at Central Saint Martins and seasoned by a stint with Jonathan Anderson, Hall carries a painter’s brush into every design, blending 14th-century manuscripts, animal fables, and flashes of ancient Rome with the rowdy charm of a village fête. Each jumper, each vest, each knitted yarn sings with colour pulled from woodland walks and herbaceous borders - marigold yellows, berry pinks, misty greens... Pull on a sweater, and who knows where you’ll end up - Elizabethan gardens, a crumbling châteaux, or perhaps a mythic hillside at dusk? Find out more in Issue 124, Rural. PRETTY IN PEACHY PINK: Amy Balfour's decorative home
PRETTY IN PEACHY PINK: Amy Balfour's decorative home. A few months ago, decorative painter Amy Balfour used an analysis service to work out what colour clothes most suit her. The verdict? Soft autumn. It makes sense, for hers is a world of rusty reds, mustard yellows, gingers, clay pinks, olives and teals – colours with a punch but also an understated earthy richness. “I like warm colours,” says the East Sussex-based artist, who has become known for her beautiful hand-painted creations – everything from intricately decorated dolls’ houses to Charleston Farmhouse–inspired mirrors and lamps. Unsurprisingly, this inviting palette also sits at the heart of the 15th-century Wealden hall house, a vernacular medieval timber-framed hall house traditional in southeast England... Discover Keiko Yanagisawa, a dynamic artist whose work bridges the traditional and the contemporary
Discover Keiko Yanagisawa, a dynamic artist whose work bridges the traditional and the contemporary. Born in Japan and trained in London, Keiko channels her deep reverence for the natural world into intricate botanical illustrations that exude delicacy and strength. Her artistry is rooted in the belief that “the natural world surrounding us is, the single, most intricate and perfect, form of art,” a philosophy that resonates throughout her elegant pen drawings of flora, brought to life with bold Japanese hues. Keiko’s inspiration stems from childhood memories on her family’s farm in Japan, where gardening and flower picking fostered her lifelong fascination with nature’s intricate textures and colours. Her decision to leave a career in business development for the pursuit of art has been transformative, allowing her to develop a sophisticated style that celebrates the delicate beauty of flowers such as the ranunculus - a motif central to her recent collaboration with Parisian interior design studio Pierre Frey. This exclusive collection, Jardins Secrets, features embroidered linen fabrics and botanical wallpapers, each piece designed to evoke the serenity and elegance of nature’s finest details. - @keiko.yanagi @lamaisonpierrefrey - #SelvedgeMagazine #BotanicalArt #JapaneseDesign #KeikoYanagisawa #NatureInspired #LuxuryTextiles #PierreFrey #JardinsSecrets #ArtAndCraftsmanship #FloralElegance #Wallpaper #WallpaperInspiration #Interiors #InteriorInspiration #Rural #RuralLife #InteriorTextiles #PatternDesign #RepeatPattern #HandDrawn #Illustration

CLOTHES FOR POETS EKÀ, a design studio based in Gurgaon, Haryana state, India, near the national capital, New Delhi, creates garments that transcend boundaries of shape, age, and race to offer universally adaptable clothing. In Issue 124, Rural, Brinda Gill interviews EKÀ’s founder Rina Singh. We hope you enjoy this extract: Brinda Gill: How were you drawn to handmade textiles? Rina Singh: I hail from a family of agriculturists, and grew up immersed in crafts and culture. During the summer months, in my ancestral to the house in Saharanpur, in rural North India, weavers would come home and install their khadi looms and weave dhurries. Yarns would be hand-spun on charkhas (hand-spinning wheels) on the verandah. My grandmother would sit with the weavers and hand knot the textile edges. I have memories of her spinning on a charkha. It was a beautiful ecosystem. BG: What is the philosophy behind EKÀ? RS: EKÀ means one in Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. I thought the kind of creativity I was drawing upon to create my brand was not just my own. I felt I was assembling a lot of craft skills and sensibilities of centuries-old textile traditions in India. I was just one part of the whole. I thought this whole community was one, and so I thought EKÀ sounded philosophically and morally right. EKÀ’s philosophy is rooted in sustainability. It is about creating consciously, working with craftspeople, working with their intelligence to provide solutions, sustaining crafts to carry them to the next generation, sustaining livelihoods, and not losing sight of aesthetics as an important ingredient of how we want to live our lives. To find out more about EKÀ and Rina Singh, pick up a copy of Issue 124, Rural.
