Teinture Sauvage is the wild-hearted creation of Céline Philippe, a former lawyer who swapped city suits for muddy boots and a dye pot in rural France. She conjures rich, seasonal colours for fabrics - all from plants and homegrown mordants. We hope you enjoy this extract from the article 'WILD DYEING', featured in Issue 124, Rural: Philippe trained at Lainamac textile training centre to learn from master dyers Michel Garcia and Magali Bontoux and experimented in her garden whenever she could. Launched in 2018, Teinture Sauvage advocates for the use of plants as mordants in natural dyeing. With Philippe’s keen eye for colour, the results are stunning. Philippe is a purist. From the start, she knew she wanted to use bio-mordants instead of conventional metal salts. At her country home in the Beaujolais region, she nurtures biodiversity by sowing plants or keeping spontaneous plants that benefit the ecosystem and her craft. Birch’s bark and oak, chestnut, rosemary, rhubarb, and black locust leaves from the garden are used for mordanting. For large quantities of fibres, she uses extracts or powdered bark from the symplocos tree, a natural mordant suitable for animal and plant fibres. To get the colour she wants, it’s all about planning ahead... Words by @annelaurecamilleri - @teinturesauvage As well as the article featured in Issue 124, you can learn more about natural dyeing in Céline's new book 'Wild Dyeing: From the Garden to Color. It is available now in English from @rizzolibooks, in French from @editionshoebeke, and in German from @stiebnerverlag. - #WildDyeing #TeintureSauvage #NaturalDye #PlantBasedColor #BioMordants #SlowCraft #FromGardenToColor #SustainableTextiles #DyePlants #SeasonalColor #TextileAlchemy #VegetableDyes #PlatDyed #NaturalColour #NaturalDyeRevolution #CraftWithNature #EcoDyer #BackToTheLand #TextileBooks #DyeGarden #RuralCreativity #SelvedgeMagazine
