Hero Friday: Trooper Chad P. Dermyer End of Watch: March 31, 2016 Today we honor the life and sacrifice of Trooper Chad P. Dermyer of the Virginia State Police — a warrior, a husband, a father, and a protector who gave his life in service to others. Trooper Dermyer was gunned down in the line of duty during a training operation at a Greyhound bus station in Richmond, Virginia. Approached by a suspect during the exercise, he stood his ground — and paid the ultimate price. He was shot multiple times in a senseless act of violence that took a good man from his family, his team, and his community. He was just 37 years old. A devoted family man and a brother in blue, Trooper Dermyer is survived by his wife and two young children. His death is a sobering reminder of the risks every law enforcement officer accepts without hesitation — to protect people they’ll never meet, to serve a community that depends on them, and to stand between chaos and order. Yes, the candidates should have arrived fit...but our reality right now is they often do not. Some will say this isn’t enough...others will tell me it is too much…or impossible with their equipment limitations. Some will even say why bother because of x,y, z reasons that are out of the profession’s control. Regardless of the excuses as to why this isn’t feasible the street is still out there. Fitness is and will be the foundation for these people before you let them go out into the world and patrol.
