Your Mother’s Day flowers are officially in full bloom here at the farm, and I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW RELIEVED WE ARE! 😅🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 It seems like such a basic thing, right? We’re a flower farm. OF COURSE we’ll be harvesting tulips at Mother’s Day…..right? Here’s the thing we haven’t talked much about: It’s been one of the toughest springs for outdoor growing that we’ve experienced in 11 years of farming. First, the winter was extremely cold. And hey, a cold Canadian winter is a good thing. We haven’t had one in a while, and that sense of normalcy felt good. But—as the calendar flipped over to spring, the weather didn’t seem to get the memo. It STAYED cold. The days were cold, the snow kept coming, and the nights continued to freeze. And then there was the rain. Countless grey and rainy days followed that cold weather, and, well, the flowers simply didn’t have any sunshine and warmth to work with, two things that they need to bloom. Before we knew it, we were 10 days behind where we typically are in the season. Normally these tulips would already be in blooms, and tucked safely into our cooler for storage, ready to use this weekend. This year, on Sunday, with just a week to go before the BIG DAY (Mother’s Day), we still had a field of green, without any blooms. BUT, a lot can happen in just a few days, and IT DID! 😅 After two days of warmer temperatures, yesterday the sun came out and the field popped into full bloom! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Suddenly it was a 5 alarm emergency to get things harvested in time, and we went from not having any tulips to working straight through our coffee break, and lunch hours to harvest as quickly as possible. The cooler is bursting at the seams with beautiful tulips now, and the big push is on to get these flowers processed so that they’ll be ready to put into bouquets over the next couple of days. We absolutely cannot wait to get these flowers out to you for your Mother’s Day bouquets! If you haven’t placed a Mother’s Day preorder yet, you’ll want to ASAP! In past years, we were already harvesting thousands of stems of tulips every day, and given that Mother’s Day is the Super Bowl of flower holidays, we NEED to be doing that. This spring, we were staring at green tulips beds, with tens of thousands of dollars of bulbs sitting in the ground, and no promise of a Mother’s Day payoff, for a crop that we’ve already put 6 months of time into. Farming simply isn’t for the fair of heart. It’s a gamble, and no year, or season, is ever a guarantee. Cue the IMMENSE relief we’re feeling to be harvesting tulips today! 😅😅😅 Our first two beds are in bloom now. 🙌🏻 Sure, the rest of the field is still 7-10 days behind, and Mother’s Day is in 6 days, and sure, there are 3 solid days of rain in the forecast (my god, what we wouldn’t give for some SUN!), but these first few tulips feel like a real victory this year, and we’re glad to have them. 💐💐 MOTHER’S DAY PREORDERS! 💐💐 With just a week to go before Mother’s Day, it’s time to get your preorder in NOW! 😅 We’re excited to be offering up the most beautiful flowers here at our farm, and they are 100% LOCALLY grown! We’ll be offering a limited number of delivery slots for Mother’s Day in the Bay of Quinte area, from Napanee to Port Hope, and in Prince Edward County. With it being such a cool spring, our outdoor tulip crop is delayed, and that uncertainty means we may not have the quantities of flowers you might typically expect from us. Preorders are important, as they will ensure that you get the bouquet that you would like. We always fill preorders first, before we stock the farmstand. Our farmstand will be OPEN to walk in customers Monday-Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 10-5. We always fill preorders before stocking the farmstand. We do ask that orders for pickup and delivery be placed through our website in our online shop. We’re unfortunately not able to accept orders for delivery social media. If you need help placing an order, please don’t hesitate to phone it us directly at 613-403-5055. If you would like to send multiple orders of flowers to multiple people, please submit a separate order for each recipient. 🌱 VEGGIE PLANTS ARE NOW AVAILABLE! 🌱 Our farmstand is stocked with our organically grown vegetable plants and herbs.  Lettuce, Onions, Kale, Peas, herbs, Strawberry plants and more are now available. These are all plants that can be planted outside NOW. Peppers, Tomatoes, Melons, Squash, and other warm season plants are not quite ready yet, due to the cold spring that we’ve been having, but, it’s also not warm enough to plant them outside yet, and there is still plenty of time to plant.  We’re OPEN Monday-Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 10-5. All 2 and 4 packs of veggie plants are $3.50 and all 3” single pots of veggies and herbs are $4.50 each. These plants are all 100% organically grown, right here in Stockdale.  ✅ What CAN you plant now? You can go ahead and plant your lettuce, onions, Swiss chard, kale, peas, and some of your herbs. ❌ What CAN’T you plant yet? Do NOT go ahead and plant your basil and peppers, melons, squash and cucumbers yet. It’s simply too cold out still, despite the fact that we have some warm days in the forecast ahead. Your basil will wilt if you give it a cold look, it certainly isn’t prepared to stand up to a cold spring wind. Your peppers also need warmer temperatures, and your melons squash and cucumbers run the risk of dampening off if they are planted too early. We know it’s tempting, but don’t plant these tender items quite yet. Keep your more tender seedlings outside during the day, when temperatures are above 10 degrees, and bring them inside at night, anytime the temperatures dip below 10 degrees. This process is called “hardening off”, and you’ll want to do this until we are consistently receiving 10 degree nights, at which point you can safely plant these more temperature sensitive seedlings outside. 🥬 Remember, you are safe to go ahead with planting your hardy spring crops like lettuce, onions, peas, kale and chard. Get those in the ground now, they love the cooler temperatures. We’re looking forward to helping you grow a healthy vegetable garden this spring!

HOW SHOULD YOUR TUBERS LOOK WHEN YOU RECEIVE THEM? This is the time of year when you are excitedly receiving your dahlia tubers from orders you placed months ago. It’s the season of “happy mail” for gardeners! While it’s exciting to be receiving these orders, plenty of questions often come up. So, let’s talk about them. Firstly, let’s get the elephant out of the room. These tubers we are receiving? They’re usually pretty ugly. Downright unattractive in every way, and we can’t fault them for it. Unlike a tulip, who’s smooth and shiny bulb looks like a Hershey’s Kiss, full of the promise of a delicious spring bloom, dahlia tubers —at first glance—don’t leave us with much to be inspired by. And yet, they are full of promise all the same. Some plants just choose to be a little mysterious with revealing their beauty, asking us to stretch our imaginations, and dahlias falls into this category. Dahlia tubers are the underground storage organs of the dahlia plant. Each variety of dahlia naturally produces a different shaped and sized tuber. Just like people, Dahlia tubers come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes. None of these shapes or sizes are “good“ or “bad“, they are just different. The shape and size of your tuber does not affect how it will bloom. Tubers are typically irregularly shaped and have a knobby or bulbous structure. They vary in size, generally ranging from a few inches to several inches long. Some varieties are long and skinny, others are round and full. The most important part of your tuber is the top piece of “crown”, found at the top of the neck of the tuber. As long as your tuber has a piece of crown and a strong unbroken neck, regardless of the size of the tuber, it will very likely grow. The “crown” is the part of the tuber that produces the “eye”, where the shoot grows from. What if a piece of the bottom of your tuber has been cut off? No need to worry. This happens accidentally with a shovel in the fall, when tubers are being dug up. Often times we might accidentally slice through the bottom of a tuber, but it bears no affect the health of the tuber or on whether or not the tuber will grow. It’s purely cosmetic.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU RECEIVE YOUR DAHLIA TUBER ORDER 👇🏻 We’ve just finished shipping all of our dahlia tuber orders across the country, and we have prepared all of our Dahlia tour orders for pick up. It truly is one of the most exciting times of the year, a time when you receive “happy mail“ in your mailbox! Just the thought of planting something beautiful in the garden gives us so much to look forward to, particularly after such a long cold winter. but, what exactly do you need to do when you receive your order? And what should you expect when you receive your order? 1️⃣ Open up your packages. The packages we prepare our Dahlia tubers in can act like little mini greenhouses if they are left sealed, and excess moisture that may build up, runs the risk of creating rot or mold. you want to open your packages, and examine your tubers. 2️⃣ Remember not to panic if you do not see an “eye” or sprout on your tuber. The rate at which tubers sprout is directly related to temperature. Here in southern Ontario we have had a long cold winter, and, just like many other things in the garden, signs of life might be running a little bit behind where they may normally be at this time of year. we store our Dahlia tubers in our basement, at 50° (10°C), and sometimes they haven’t quite had a chance to “wake up“ before we ship them out to you. Once the temperatures begin to warm up, your tubers will sense that it’s spring, and eyes will begin to sprout. At this time of year, they are just waking up from a long winters nap, and some are slower to wake up than others. We find that some varieties might sprout “eyes” quite quickly, where other varieties take between four and six weeks to sprout. Patience, as always, is a virtue in gardening. 3️⃣ Keep your pouches open for good air flow, and leave your dahlia tubers in a warm/room temperature room to allow them time to “eye up”. No need to put them in a sunny window or in direct light. They won’t need like to sprout, they’ll just need a warmer temperature. Make sure not to plant outside until the soil is at least 60 degrees, and signs of frost have passed. More on all of this soon!

There are a lot of reasons I walked away from the ‘traditional’ flower shops I used to work in 14 years ago. I went into a career as a florist because I loved flowers. Seems simple enough, right? I grew up on a farm, hands in the earth, feet firmly rooted in agriculture as a way of life. As a florist I watched flowers come into the shop, flown from all corners of the world. I unpacked the same case of carnations every week. It didn’t matter if it was July or December, those carnations just kept showing up. We often wore gloves to unpack those blooms, to protect ourselves from the chemicals that were used on the flowers. I watched the commodification of something I once loved, bought for the lowest prices possible and sold for the highest prices obtainable. It left me asking questions there were no easy answers to. I walked away from that part of my career 14 years ago and haven’t looked back. My intention when I started this farm was to live seasonally again, the way I grew up. Peonies in June in Ontario, and dahlias in August. Every bloom in its own due time for its own moment. Less commodification, more care. I wanted to build something sustainable. I wanted to shine a light on what could be grown right HERE in Ontario. There are no easy answers in farming. We still use fossil fuels in our vehicles and tractor. We use (and constantly reuse) plastic trays in the greenhouse and ground cover in the fields. We have a way to go. And yet, we’ve come so far. We don’t ship flowers in from all over the world. We don’t offer you red roses at Valentine’s Day. We offer you the best of what’s grown right here in Ontario, in a three hour radius. We do that 12 months of the year, and that’s pretty important. We don’t use cellophane or plastics in our packaging. We use paper, and reusable containers. We use our platform to show you just how beautiful living seasonally is. I don’t have all of the answers, but I hold myself accountable to making better choices every day. To being honest with you about what we do and why we do it. Today is Earth Day. Let’s keep making the best choices we can and hold our politicians accountable to do the same.

We’ve been waiting for the temperatures to stay above zero at night in all parts of the country, in order to ship safely, and things are finally warm enough in all parts of the country to safely get your orders out to you!

They are the gatekeepers, problem solvers and command centrals. And honestly, they don’t get enough credit for everything they do to make our lives, workplaces and institutions run smoothly.
