Bikepacking the Monumental Loop with Rue, Chris, Chas, Alvin, Mateo & Miron. On the airplane from Rouleur Live in London back home to Tucson, I texted Chris about getting together. Somehow, three years had passed since the last time we rode. “I was thinking of heading to New Mexico and riding the Dangerbird in Las Cruces after Thanksgiving. Not sure what you have going on then but could be a fun and quick desert send.” — Chris A couple of texts later and we had a plan. A week later, we packed up, drove out, put the bags on the bikes and hit the road. I’d been meaning to make a trip to Las Cruces for years and I’m so glad we did. Matt Mason put together this route, hosts an annual group ride rally and personally guided us in and out of his hometown. Some locals greeted us at the start and really made us feel welcome. Beyond that, it was good to be shredding in the desert with our friends– plenty of time to talk, lots of laughing and the beauty of every sunset. This route is in New Mexico, close to Texas and close to the Mexican border. It’s really quiet and feels remote. It’s tough too– after monsoons, the roads are loose and at times washed out. It’s a great mountain biking challenge, easy for camping with plenty of access to small towns with good food. I always love riding, but I especially love riding with Rue. And I had a lot of fun spending time with the thoughtful bros—met Chris in California, Miron in Alaska, Chas & Mateo in Iceland and Alvin on this trip— he’s premiering AFUERA in LA on Friday, a film that his partner put together about his race across the Pyrenees.
