If your UTIs keep coming back after every prescription, read this 👇 In 2024, researchers published a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in Clinical Infectious Diseases. They followed 174 premenopausal women with recurrent UTIs for one year. The women were placed into four groups: 1️⃣ Placebo 2️⃣ Oral probiotics 3️⃣ Vaginal probiotics 4️⃣ A combination of oral + vaginal probiotics After 4 months, here’s what they found: ✅ 70% of the placebo group experienced a UTI ✅ 40.9% of the vaginal probiotic group experienced a UTI ✅ 31.8% of the combination group experienced a UTI The vaginal and combination groups also had fewer total recurrences and went longer before their first symptomatic UTI. No serious adverse events were reported. Why this matters 🧬 The vaginal microbiome plays an important role in urinary health. Protective Lactobacillus bacteria help maintain an environment that makes it harder for unwanted bacteria to take hold. In this trial, supporting that environment with specific probiotic formulations was associated with fewer repeat infections. This does not mean probiotics prevent UTIs for everyone. It means that in this controlled study, certain oral and vaginal probiotic approaches were linked to fewer recurrences in a specific group of women. If you experience recurrent UTIs (commonly defined as 2 in 6 months or 3 in 12 months), talk to a clinician. Recurrent UTI management should always be personalized, especially if antibiotics have been used repeatedly. Strain selection, delivery method (oral vs vaginal), and clinical validation matter. Not all probiotic formulas are interchangeable. 💾 Save this if you’re researching recurrent UTI options. 📤 Share with someone navigating the antibiotic loop. 💗 Follow @myhappyv for clinically informed, science-forward microbiome education. #HappyV #UTIsupport #probioticsforwomen #vaginalhealth #vaginalcare Citation: Gupta et al., “Prophylactic Oral/Vaginal Probiotics for Recurrent UTIs,” Clinical Infectious Diseases 78, no. 5 (2024): 1154–1161.
