Of all the things I’ve done in my career, this is what I’m most proud of: When women come up to me and say thank you— Thank you for giving me hope. Thank you for giving me answers. Thank you for giving me permission to stop accepting the status quo. That’s the heart of this mission. Not just to inform—but to empower. To make sure every woman knows she’s not alone, she’s not crazy, and she’s absolutely not supposed to suffer in silence. We’re rewriting the narrative—together. #menopause #perimenopause #drmaryclaire #thenewmenopause #womenshealth #healthcareequity #menopauseadvocate #hopeandhealing #changethestory

🧠💪🦴 Gut Health & Menopause: A New Frontier

A new 2025 review is turning the spotlight on a surprising player in the menopause transition: your gut microbiota
🧠💪🦴 Gut Health & Menopause: A New Frontier A new 2025 review is turning the spotlight on a surprising player in the menopause transition: your gut microbiota. As estrogen levels decline during menopause, they don’t just impact bones, brain, and belly fat—they may also shift the balance of microbes in your gut. And those microbes? They’re not just passengers. They can influence how your body metabolizes estrogen, a function linked to a subset of bacteria called the estrobolome. Why does this matter? 👉 Changes in the gut microbiome during menopause may affect: Weight gain and fat distribution Bone and metabolic health Cognitive function Risk of certain cancers Emerging evidence suggests that targeted prebiotics and probiotics—especially strains like Lactobacillus—can help improve gut diversity and potentially support overall health in midlife women. But here’s the catch: the data is still early, and we need much more research to understand exactly how to personalize these interventions. This review calls for a deeper dive into how the gut and hormones interact—and how this knowledge could shape personalized menopause care in the future. 🥦 The takeaway? Gut health may be the next big lever in managing menopause. Think fiber, fermented foods, and thoughtful supplementation. 📌 Your gut is talking. It might be time we start listening—especially in menopause. 📚 Liaquat M et al. Menopause isn’t a subspecialty
Menopause isn’t a subspecialty. It’s not “wellness adjacent.” It’s not niche. It’s basic, necessary, and foundational medicine—for 100% of women who live long enough. And yet? Menopause remains one of the most understudied, underfunded, and underrepresented areas in all of healthcare. • Fewer than 1 in 5 OB/GYN residents receive any formal training in menopause care. • NIH funding for menopause research is a fraction of what’s allocated to male-dominant conditions. • And for decades, flawed studies like the early reporting of the WHI derailed progress, leaving millions without guidance or access to evidence-based treatment. This is not a boutique concern. It’s not optional. Menopause is a universal transition with real metabolic, cardiovascular, neurological, and musculoskeletal implications. Hot flashes are just the beginning. We’re talking about bone loss. Body composition changes. Dementia risk. Loss of sexual function. Sleep disorders. Increased cardiovascular disease. Women are dismissed, gaslit, or told to “wait it out”—despite an overwhelming body of science showing that intervention matters. It’s time to stop treating menopause like an afterthought and start treating it like the major medical event that it is. Because this isn’t a women’s issue. It’s a healthcare failure. And we’re not waiting quietly anymore. #menopause #perimenopause #drmaryclaire #thenewmenopause #womenshealth #medicaleducation #hormonesmatter #equityinmedicine #menopausecare #gendermedicine #WHI #healthgap

My latest @contrariannews piece digs into the round of whiplash over WHI funding
My latest @contrariannews piece digs into the round of whiplash over WHI funding. I was especially inspired by @estrogen_matters recent post about it, which motivated me to put pen to paper (thanks Avrum and Carol!). Yes, I am among those who have made public demands that the WHI issue a modernized and accurate statement clarifying the safety and efficacy of HRT. But even with that imperfect history, the funding cuts send the worst possible message about the necessity of women’s health research. I truly hope the reversal by HHS sticks. I’m also really optimistic about all that’s happening in state legislatures to attempt to improve menopause care. No, those bills wont solve the research gap. But we have to commit to fights we can WIN — and this is surely one of them! Thank you @drmaryclaire and @smalonemd for always answering my questions and providing so much wisdom to fuel my wonky policy brain. And thank you to all the Citizen’s Guide contributors who are making it possible for the masses to speak up and out! Onward friends! #menopause #perimenopause #womenshealth

Most women enter menopause without the facts they need to make informed decisions, and too many are left overwhelmed, confused, and unsupported
Most women enter menopause without the facts they need to make informed decisions, and too many are left overwhelmed, confused, and unsupported. But midlife isn’t the end of the story. It’s the moment to take the wheel, rewrite the rules, and reclaim the ship. Because with real data, real choices, and real control, women don’t pause…they power up. #estrogenmatters #womenshealth #menopause

Bursting with pride for my incredible daughter, Katherine, @katherine
Bursting with pride for my incredible daughter, Katherine, @katherine.haver who just passed the USMLE Step 1! This is one of the most challenging exams on the road to becoming a physician—and she did it with determination, discipline, and heart. And let me be clear: she’s not following in my footsteps—she’s forging her own path. Every step she’s taken has been her own. She chose this. She earned this. She made it happen. Watching her become the woman—and future doctor—she was meant to be is one of the greatest joys of my life. Congratulations, Katherine. You are extraordinary. #proudmom #futuredoctor #usmlestep1 #womeninmedicine #drmaryclaire #thenewmenopause #notfollowingfootsteps #ownpath

Feeling tired lately
Feeling tired lately? It might feel like you're getting 30% less rest—well, you might be. As a woman enters perimenopause and reaches menopause, her hormone levels decline, leading to less restorative sleep. So yes, you're not crazy, you really are getting less rest! #menopause #sleepinmenopause #sleepdoctor #sleepgoddessmd #drandreamatsumura

Let’s end the myth: women—even post-menopausal women—respond just as well as men to resistance training when measured by relative improvements in muscle size and strength
Let’s end the myth: women—even post-menopausal women—respond just as well as men to resistance training when measured by relative improvements in muscle size and strength. Thanks to Dr. Stuart Phillips @mackinprof and McMaster University’s Department of Kinesiology, the latest data makes it clear: We are not too late. We are not the exception. We are human—and muscle responds. Young adults (18–45): Refalo et al. (2025) found no sex difference in muscle hypertrophy when measured as percent change from baseline. RT can be programmed similarly for men and women, with differences based on goals, not biology. Older adults (>50): Jones et al. (2021) reviewed 30 studies and found no sex-based difference in relative gains. Women actually showed slightly greater lower-body strength improvements. Hawley et al. (2023) confirmed this in adults 60+: equal gains in strength and lean mass across sexes—including post-menopausal women. Resistance training is one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent muscle loss, improve metabolic health, and preserve independence with age. Yet too many women are still told it’s too late—or that we can’t “keep up.” It’s time to retire those outdated beliefs. Train for strength. Train for health. Train because it works. Tag someone who needs this reminder—and let’s keep rewriting the rules. #menopause #perimenopause #drmaryclaire #thenewmenopause #resistancetraining #musclehealth #womenshealth #mcmasteruniversity #sarcopeniaprevention #metabolichealth #strengthforall #evidencebasedfitness

Her message is loud and clear: women deserve better
Her message is loud and clear: women deserve better. Better science, better communication, and better access to treatments that work. But this article is bigger than one doctor or one institution; it’s a sign that the menopause movement is gaining traction at our highest centers of learning. That medical education is finally starting to catch up to what millions of women already know: this life stage is transformative, not shameful, and support shouldn’t be a privilege, it should be the standard. #menopause #perimenopause @yale @yaleschoolofmed

When I talk to divorce attorneys—especially those who work primarily with women—they often say the same thing: menopause can play a role in the breakdown of a marriage
When I talk to divorce attorneys—especially those who work primarily with women—they often say the same thing: menopause can play a role in the breakdown of a marriage. Not always. But more often than we acknowledge. The mood changes, sleep deprivation, brain fog, loss of libido, and identity shifts can add up—and when those symptoms are ignored or dismissed, it can shake the foundation of even the strongest relationship. But here’s the other side: menopause can also be the first time a woman truly prioritizes herself. Her health. Her needs. Her voice. And sometimes, that clarity leads to difficult but necessary change. It’s not always a tragedy. Sometimes, it’s a beginning. What do you think? Have you seen this in your life or someone you know? I want to hear from you. #menopause #perimenopause #drmaryclaire #thenewmenopause

The gender health gap is real—and it’s costing women their health, dignity, and sometimes their lives
The gender health gap is real—and it’s costing women their health, dignity, and sometimes their lives. Most clinical research has centered men. Most medical training overlooks menopause. Most symptoms we report are minimized or misdiagnosed. It’s not a personal failure. It’s a systemic one. We deserve research. We deserve care. We deserve to be believed. #menopause #perimenopause #drmaryclaire #thenewmenopause

There’s a tremendous amount of misunderstanding and misinformation around patients who are candidates for hormone replacement therapy. I would start there first then we dive in and see what are we trying to do? Are we trying to limit inflammation, are we trying to limit the accumulation of this real fat, are we trying to stop hot flashes, are we trying to help keep your bone strong all of those have separate treatment options. #menopause #perimenopause #thenewmenopause @
