A little bit about what makes our story so personal…

A little bit about what makes our story so personal… Long before I started Namai, I discovered these vintage Kantha quilts and just became totally obsessed with them. I’m half Indian, but I didn’t grow up with my Indian culture. For me, discovering these quilts felt like a way to reconnect with my heritage. And the bright colors and bold designs that I always imagined women wearing in India made me so happy.  So I started buying the quilts, they were all over my house, and I was giving them to friends. At some point I just had the idea that I wanted to start making jackets with them, and it was something that was in the back of my mind for many years, until one day I just started to do it. It gives me joy to see people respond to the colors of the jackets the same way I did when I discovered the quilts.

Our first cotton handloom collection just launched
Our first cotton handloom collection just launched! Times like this I wish we had a store- there are so many details that I thought about when I designed this collection that I want to share! I’ll definitely do a live next week to try on some pieces in the studio with the team… Meanwhile… these pieces are dyed in three different indigo tones, and each panel of clothing has all three colours. It’s a soft cotton twill (twill is the diagonal pattern that denim has) but the difference is, it’s super soft and completely hand woven. The buttons are covered in fabric, and there’s hand stitching details on the hems. The shirt pocket has a palm tree hand embroidered on it- coconut palm trees are important to me as they are the symbol of Kerala, where my Indian roots are. These photos are taken in CO by @ali_v_photo and modeled by @lcj271

There’s something about spring — a shift, a softness — that feels like permission to create more intuitively
There’s something about spring — a shift, a softness — that feels like permission to create more intuitively. Being more grounded in our new studio has given us space to play, and to explore the materials we love most: storied textiles, hand embroidery, one-of-one amazingness. A few new pieces just dropped, each one made from vintage suzani and kantha quilts. Quietly vibrant. (And something bigger is coming in a few days… 💫)

New Addition to the Kaira Family
New Addition to the Kaira Family! Introducing the Kaira Vest. Wear it like a vest, wear it like a top, she’s cute and colourful and all things spring! To celebrate the launch we felt inspired to do a studio shoot of Kairas and all agreed that the Kaira is the perfect piece- jacket or vest- to wear with high waisted denim! We don’t launch new styles very often, but this feels organic, and exciting at the same time. Let us know what you think! 💜💜💜

Sometimes you have ideas in the back of your head… and you just have to do them
Sometimes you have ideas in the back of your head… and you just have to do them! I discovered Kantha quilts by happenstance, on Etsy browsing for vintage shoe inspiration, as I was a shoe designer! I became obsessed with Kantha quilts, and had them all over my home, bought them for friends, and I always thought- one day I want to make clothing with these quilts. In 2020 I did it, and now I get to spend every day surrounded by gorgeous colours and textures. It started as a way to connect with my cultural heritage, and now it’s grown into a bigger dream- to spread happiness and empowerment through clothing to our artisans- you the wearer, and our team in the US, and anyone that comes into contact and connection with Namai. To be continued… ❤️❤️❤️
