I recently returned from a trip across Japan and South Korea with our partners who help spread Harney & Sons, and I came home humbled by what they have built. The shops are not ours. In Japan, our exclusive partner has opened stores under the Harney name across the country, several inside Takashimaya, and most recently a tea salon in Osaka. In Korea, our partner who has imported our teas for nearly twenty years and runs three stores in Seoul. We did not build those businesses. They did, because they believed a tea blended in Millerton, New York, was worth pouring for tea drinkers around the world. In every one of those rooms, the same thing kept happening. There was a cup of our tea being prepared for someone in the middle of their day. That is what everyday luxury is supposed to mean, and it has traveled much further than I sometimes remember. My own work was with the teams on the ground: hosting tea seminars for their customers, brewing Earl Grey Supreme and English Breakfast, walking through how we build a blend as people tasted it for the first time, and what teas make for great pairings at different times of the day. I recently returned from a wonderful trip Japan, where one thing was impossible to miss: **Matcha is everywhere.** Of course, matcha lattes and desserts continue to grow in popularity around the world. But what surprised me was how deeply the matcha boom is now affecting the entire Japanese tea industry. At tea auctions and in conversations with growers, exporters, and tea masters, I kept hearing the same message: demand for matcha has increased dramatically, and the effects are being felt throughout the market. Because matcha is made from shade-grown tea, more farmers are planting and producing tea destined for matcha production. Competition for high-quality tea leaves has intensified, and prices for many Japanese teas, not just matcha, have risen very significantly. Luckily, our main supplier: Tsuyoshi’s family has been at this for almost 400 years. He and his daughters (see slide 2) buy great green teas at every market during the short season. Then, the trick is to blend the various teas from various cultivars into great tasting matcha. They try to emphasize umami that will give a mouth filling brew with some natural sweetness. Many of the people I met believe that consumers are beginning to appreciate Japanese tea itself. Matcha may be the introduction, but it often leads people to discover sencha, gyokuro, hojicha, and the remarkable diversity of Japanese tea. For tea lovers, that is good news. For over 40 years, Harney & Sons has worked with Japanese tea producers, blenders, and exporters. The tea behind the powder. 🍵 - Shown here are clips from our sourcing trip to Uji where we saw the process of picking, and processing of the shaded tea leaves that make Matcha. The leaves are partially processed and then purchased at auction, where tasters assess the leaf’s characteristics, as well as the sweetness and umami of the brew. Finally, those leaves will be processed into Tencha, and eventually become powdered Matcha.
