Geronimo Bad ass of the week SSG Thomas K. Fogarty 27JAN1982-06MAY2012 Thomas was born and raised in Alameda, California. As a kid, Thomas was always fond of the Military and was often seen wearing camouflage. He was also a kind person with a “disarming and mischievous grin”, who wanted to take care of every stray dog he came across. he was also a lover of the outdoors and loved snowboarding and mountain biking. Like most Americans, Thomas was affected by the events of 9/11. He joined the Army in January 2004. After a short time as a hometown recruiting tour, he reported to his first unit and deployed to Iraq in April. He was known as a kind and generous person who loved to take small family trips to swap meets. Thomas’s dedication and hard work allowed him to rapidly rise to the rank of SSG. His final assignment was Charlie Company 3-509th PIR, where he would deploy with to Afghanistan. While on patrol in Ahmad-Kheyl, he was a vehicle commander when the convoy was attacked. He was fatally wounded when his vehicle was struck by an IED, which also wounded three other occupants. Thomas left behind a huge family, including his wife and two sons. But not just his personal family, but also his Geronimo family, which have a get together put on every year for any member of Charlie Company. Jimmy and Amanda Etro, have kept this tradition alive for the last 10 years. When deciding where to bury Thomas, his Family had chosen Arlington, so that it would be easier for his brothers to visit. On this day, 55 years ago, on May 8, 1970, Lance Corporal Miguel Keith, 18, of Omaha, Nebraska, was serving as a machine gunner with Combined Action Platoon 1-3-2 in Quang Ngai Province, Vietnam. That morning, his platoon was engaged in a fierce firefight when they came under a heavy ground attack by a much larger enemy force. The attack began with intense enemy fire directed at the platoon’s defensive positions. Keith, who had already been wounded early in the assault, refused to be evacuated and instead continued to fight. He ran across fire-swept terrain to check on the security of vital positions, all while under constant enemy fire. Despite his injuries, he operated his machine gun with precision, unleashing deadly fire at the advancing enemy and forcing them to hesitate. As the attack intensified, Keith saw a group of enemy soldiers moving toward his platoon’s command post. With no thought for his own safety, he charged forward, moving through a hail of gunfire. He took down three of the enemy soldiers and forced the others to retreat, buying valuable time for his fellow Marines. In the midst of the chaos, a grenade exploded near Keith, knocking him to the ground and severely wounding him. Though his injuries were critical, he refused to stop fighting. He spotted a group of about 25 enemy soldiers preparing to attack his platoon’s position. Determined to stop them, Keith again moved forward, advancing toward the enemy while firing his weapon. His assault was successful, killing four of the enemy and scattering the rest. However, during this final push, Keith was mortally wounded by enemy fire. Keith’s actions were instrumental in disrupting the enemy’s attack and ensuring the survival of his platoon. His bravery and tenacity under fire helped prevent the enemy from overrunning their position and exemplified the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, which was presented to his family by Vice President Spiro T. Agnew on September 15, 1971. Keith is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Omaha, Nebraska.

Howdy y’all. My name is Cole Barba and I am a former 0331 machine gunner. I’ve deployed with V2/4 and V2/5 respectively. I joined the Marine Corps to give myself an opportunity to better myself as a person and support my dream of becoming a professional musician. I’ve struggled throughout my life with anxiety and depression and it’s something I cope with and channel thru my music. Music is the one and only thing that keeps me out of The Black. As of yesterday, the dream has an opportunity to become a reality. Our songs “Sunny Dungeon Blues” and “Not the One” were selected to be apart of Rolling Stone’s Next Top Hitmaker competition. “Sunny Dungeon Blues” is a song I wrote for my younger brother who was experiencing a lot of the same emotions I was and I didn’t know how to talk to him. It’s a song that comes screaming from the bottom of my fucking heart. Winner of the competition receives a chance to play in Central Park to 60,000 people, as well as a $50,000 check. I plan to donate $20k of this to Veterans Mental Health Services if we win. The rest will be going towards making more music. No one deserves to feel like they are alone.
