Note to self: take the time to play with more blooms this season (and of course that’s always easier said than done 😅)

We’re besties for life now and there’s no escaping 👯‍♀️

The magic of nature through the seasons 🌷✨🌷✨🌷✨

Ah yes, it’s the most wonderful time of the year - TULIP SEASON (ok Antonio, I’m pretty sure you just said that DAFFODIL season was the most wonderful time of the year so can you please just make up your mind already 🤷🏻‍♂️).⁣ ⁣ And was there ever a flower as pretty as tulips?! I think not. And could there be anything more dreamy than a patch of tulips growing in the garden?! I think not. And could there ever be anyone who would rather grow brussel sprouts or broccoli (ewww) rather than tulips?!? I think not (well I know one individual ahem my sister ahem team veggie 🙄).⁣ ⁣ Ah yes, the tulips have arrived and so therefore it must be the most wonderful time of the flower year here at AVF 🥰🌷🌷🌷

Don’t be so judgey 🌷🌷🌷

What makes this ONE tulip so special? Of all the tulips I planted last fall, only one has produced randomly streaked petals (it should’ve bloomed solid pink).⁣ ⁣ These particular tulips are often referred to as a Rembrandt tulip, named for the Dutch artist who frequently included them in his still life paintings.⁣ ⁣ The randomly streaked petals are the result of a virus (although today hybridizers have managed to mimic those streaks in certain varieties).⁣ ⁣ At the height of the 17th century tulip craze, now referred to as “Tulip Mania,” the single bulb that produced this flower would’ve made me a very rich man! The romantic in me can’t help but think of the 17th century Antonio who would’ve discovered this one tulip and how excited he’d be to get the single bulb to market 🌷🏦😎

With the arrival of the very first spring blooms of the season, I felt inspired to put all else down, set aside some time, and build an arrangement. After all, the weeds can wait… they’ll still be there tomorrow. So let’s take some time to enjoy the blooms, as they’re here for a good time, not a long time 🥰🌷🌷🌷

What would you call this colour palette? Orangey, peachy, white? Peaches and cream…?! What ever it is, I’m currently obsessed. ⁣ ⁣ For inquiring minds, here’s a list of the varieties: ⁣ ⁣ 🌷 Tulip ‘King Parrot’ ⁣ 🌼 Narcissus ‘Mammoth Mountain’⁣ 🌼 Narcissus ‘Kapiti Peach’⁣ 🌾 Leucojum ‘Gravetye Giant’⁣ ⁣ Happy Tuesday, flower lovers 😘💐

5 steps to giving your roses their annual spring pruning:⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 1. Remove the winter protective mulch. I typically use garden soil or compost, so I simply spread it out across the rose bed.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 2. Remove winter dieback. For varieties which aren’t showing any dieback, follow the following: prune back canes by 1/3 for garden variety shrub roses, and prunes back canes by 2/3 for cutting varieties.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 3. Prune above an outward facing bud. This will encourage outward growth, allowing plenty of air circulation throughout the centre of the shrub.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 4. Prune any canes crowding the centre of the shrub. Again, this will allow for plenty of air circulation, and help prevent any disease issues.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 5. Prune out any weak canes which won’t produce flowers this season.⁣⁣ ⁣ 🌸 ONE LAST NOTE!
