5 steps to giving your roses their annual spring pruning:⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 1. Remove the winter protective mulch. I typically use garden soil or compost, so I simply spread it out across the rose bed.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 2. Remove winter dieback. For varieties which aren’t showing any dieback, follow the following: prune back canes by 1/3 for garden variety shrub roses, and prunes back canes by 2/3 for cutting varieties.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 3. Prune above an outward facing bud. This will encourage outward growth, allowing plenty of air circulation throughout the centre of the shrub.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 4. Prune any canes crowding the centre of the shrub. Again, this will allow for plenty of air circulation, and help prevent any disease issues.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 5. Prune out any weak canes which won’t produce flowers this season.⁣⁣ ⁣ 🌸 ONE LAST NOTE!
