No-Bake Oatmeal Cookies Ingredients: •1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter •2 cups granulated sugar •1/2 cup milk •1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder •1/2 cup peanut butter (creamy or chunky) •2 teaspoons vanilla extract •3 cups quick-cooking oats •Optional: pinch of salt Instructions: 1. Prepare your baking surface: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. 2. Boil the base: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, sugar, milk, and cocoa powder. Deep in the Appalachian hills, two twin brothers, Son and Bo, live in a creaky old house that is as haunted as their family always swore it was. Everyone knew the spirit of "Annie" made herself at home there, shifting furniture just slightly, sighing dramatically from empty rooms, and occasionally flipping a cornbread over on the griddle just to remind folks she was around. One Easter morning, Bo sat cross-legged in the living room, staring at a massive Easter egg, brightly painted and almost as tall as he was. His buddy, @tumbleweedscountrycircus, had left it on the porch overnight. No note. No warning. Just the egg. "You gonna open it?" Son asked, leaning against the doorway, munching on a handful of boiled peanuts. "Don’t rush me," Bo muttered. He poked at the egg. It wobbled. Annie sighed from the attic. He took a deep breath, pried it open—and out popped hundreds of smaller eggs, each one cracking open upon landing, releasing an explosion of glitter, rubber chickens, and honking clown noses that bounced around like popcorn in a hot skillet. Annie, clearly unimpressed, turned on all the big lights in the house. Bo, ignoring the chaos, clapped back at his brother. "This is great and all, but listen—I’m movin’ to Japan." Son blinked at him through a haze of airborne confetti. "Come again?" "Boiled peanut stand. Right in Tokyo. Market's untapped." Son sighed. Annie, listening from above, groaned dramatically, knocked a photo frame off the mantel, and probably considered haunting a new family altogether.

The legend of Swift's Silver Mine is a fascinating tale rooted in Appalachian folklore. It revolves around an alleged silver mine discovered in the late 1700s by an Englishman named Jonathan Swift. According to the story, Swift found a vein of pure silver ore in the Appalachian Mountains, possibly in eastern Kentucky, southwest Virginia, or eastern Tennessee. Swift reportedly mined the silver for several years, smelting it into coins and bars. However, the mine's exact location remains a mystery, as Swift supposedly buried much of the treasure and later walled up the cave due to various obstacles, including attacks by Native Americans and crew mutinies. Tragically, Swift was stricken blind before he could return to the mine, leaving its location lost to history. The tale has inspired countless treasure hunters and amateur prospectors over the years, with maps and journals attributed to Swift fueling the search. What a fucking night. Dolly and I had the absolute pleasure of spending our evening at the @frijolenesschurch graciously hosted by @jd_pinkus and @muskratcamille. I was privileged to share the stage with an incredible story teller, songwriter, and all around great fella @theappalachianson. The crowd was the best of ever played for. The energy and community in that place was a balm for a weary body and I am grateful to have been welcomed by every single one of yall. Thanks for making an old clown from Nebraska feel like a king. A chilling legend that has haunted the waters of North Carolina since the beginning. The tale speaks of a beautiful dark-haired woman who appears in the dreams of men for days, slowly consuming their thoughts until they become obsessed with her. Eventually, she lures them to the river, where she finally reveals herself in the water. But when they get close enough, she pulls them under, never to be seen again.

However, the study did highlight the moral panics of the time—how fear and superstition could lead to accusations of witchcraft. Old Nance, sometimes referred to as Nance Dude, is a figure steeped in Appalachian folklore. She was a woman from Western North Carolina who became infamous due to a tragic event in the early 1900s. Some considered her a witch, while others saw her as a victim of circumstance. In 1913, Nance Dude, then 65 years old, was convicted of causing the death of her two-year-old granddaughter. The child was found buried in a cave in Haywood County, and the case led to widespread outrage. She was nearly lynched before being sentenced to 30 years in prison, though she only served 15 years before being paroled at the age of 80. She lived out the rest of her life in poverty, chopping wood to sell to tourists until she passed away at the age of 104 in 1952. Her story has been retold in books and plays, often portraying her as a tragic figure caught in the harsh realities of mountain life.
