I’ve learned over the years that change doesn’t happen by “keeping the peace” or staying silent. Change happens when we stand up, and get loud. But here’s what they don’t tell you, you don’t have to stand alone. When I started advocating for a woman’s right to breastfeed in public and on social media, it wasn’t “cool.” There was so much pushback. Friends and family called it cringe, shamed me for posting, pretended it didn’t exist. But 25,000 of you signed the petition anyway. Moms kept posting anyway. Even when it was hard. Even when it was lonely. You drove this movement. We just helped point the car. Because of this community, real change happened. And there is still sooo much work to be done, but if this proved anything, it’s that we can do it together. Use your voice, even if it shakes. We’ve got your back. 🤍

Has anyone ever asked you: “Is he/she a good baby?” 🥴
Has anyone ever asked you: “Is he/she a good baby?” 🥴 I don’t know about you, but I never know how to respond to that. Like what the hell is a “good baby” brenda?? And more importantly, what in your mind are you classifying as a bad baby?? I hate when people ask this because it almost demonizes NORMAL behaviors. A baby that cries a lot isn’t a “bad baby.” A baby that wakes up in the middle of the night isn’t a bad baby. A baby that struggles to latch isn’t a bad baby! And it’s not that moms don’t want you to ask about them or the baby, but using phrases like “good baby” is both confusing and conflicting. Babies cry. A lot. That’s literally their ONLY way of communicating their needs. Babies eat. A lot. Their brains and bodies are growing sooo much they need to eat to keep up with it. Babies wake up. A lot. They have no way of regulating themselves, and are still learning how to fall asleep on their own. Instead of asking “are they a good baby?” try one of these instead: “How is sleep going? You doing okay mom?” “How’s feeding going? I know you’re doing your best! “How is baby doing today?” It takes away the label, and opens the door to helpful conversation that shows new parents you see them, and that you care.💗

Having a new baby means learning new things, and it’s A LOT. 😂 I promise one day you will remember these numbers off the top of your head but until then, save this the next time you don’t know what to do with your breastmilk!

Demonstrating Compassion Through Acts of Kindness
I grew up in a home that showed me love and generosity for those who needed it. And to be completely vulnerable here… sometimes it was MY family who needed it. My mom and dad showed me what it looked like to show up for others, even when they didn’t ask, even when they weren’t vocal about their hardships, even when we didn’t have much to offer. It was our job to take notice of those around us, and step up, no questions asked. The parents who sent the neighborhood friend home with extra snacks because they knew they didn’t have any at home. My mom and dad who let a coworker (and their family) who barely spoke english and didn’t have a place to live, move in with us until they could get back up on their feet. My dad who fixed the neighbors car for free because she had no other way to get to work in the morning. Growing up I told myself I would be that person. That when the opportunity came, I would show up for those in need. I’ve learned that it doesn’t always take some grand gesture or lots of money. Most of the time it’s something small, meaningful, and centered around compassion. And the cool thing about it is once you start setting the example, others will follow. My favorite messages from my team are the ones like this one. The ones where they went above and beyond for a customer because we love them, or understand them, or have been in similar situations and wished the same compassion was offered to us. You are everything to us. We wouldn’t be here without you.

You see it all over social media. Influencers, birth workers, expecting mothers.
You see it all over social media. Influencers, birth workers, expecting mothers. “I want a natural birth!” “Everything I’m doing to have a natural birth.” “3 ways to prepare for a natural birth.” We all know what they mean. They’re talking about delivering vaginally, usually, without an epidural. The reason why I hate this so much is because it’s labeling what’s “natural,” and what isn’t. ALL BIRTH IS NATURAL. It doesn’t matter how your baby came out of you. For 9 months you grew an entire human being from your blood and your bones. Why should the way they came earthside have the final say on whether it was “natural” or not. “But women gave birth naturally for hundreds of years before c-sections and epidurals, it’s the easy way out.” Yeah, okay Brenda, women also died for hundreds of years because they didn’t have access to c-sections and pain management. Also, I don’t know ANY situation where getting cut into is EASY?? Birth is complicated.Sh*t happens. Sometimes birth doesn’t always go according to your birth plan. And if it doesn’t, the last thing you should feel is guilt, shame or embarrassment. Maybe you planned for an unmedicated birth, but after 16+ hours of labor your body needed help relaxing, so you got the epidural. Still a natural birth. Maybe you decided to schedule an induction, or maybe even a planned c-section. Still natural birth. Language matters. It can either bring us together and unite us, or separate and isolate us. And the last thing a new mom needs is to feel isolated or feeling less-than because of the way her baby was delivered. Stop calling unmedicated, vaginal births “natural births.” Call them what they are. Vaginal Births. Unmedicated Births. One way of birth is not inherently “more natural” than the other.

I can still remember the shock I felt when I realized there were ZERO breastfeeding brands that showed women BREASTFEEDING. It felt like a oxymoron.😂 It’s hard to think about a time where breastfeeding in public was “discouraged.” It wasn’t until 2019 that EVERY STATE had laws that protected a woman’s right to breastfeed in public. And before that? A Restaurant could literally kick out a woman for “indecency” because she was breastfeeding her baby (this still happens, we still have work to do). I think it’s important for us to remember how far we’ve come. And to remember that change happens when we are loud, unapologetic, and challenge the status quo. I’m convinced it’s mothers that will change the world.

Did you know that there was a doctor(a man) in the 1920s(not even worth mentioning his name) who wrote a book telling parents to avoid hugging and kissing children and to maintain emotional distance to prevent creating “needy” children. And another doctor(a man) advised mothers to let infants “cry it out” for hours and claimed frequent feeding, carrying, or comforting would spoil them. WHAT??? And of course now 100 years later science confirms what mothers felt for decades. Cuddling, holding, and responding to a baby’s cries are not “bad habits”. They are biological needs that help regulate a baby’s nervous system and build secure attachments. So the next time someone tells you “they’re manipulating you” I give you full permission to say “No brenda, they’re not. They’re literally just a fucking baby communicating the only way they know how to.”
