Legendary visit with one of the greatest designers—Charlie Hollis Jones. We had the rare honor of spending time in his studio, hearing firsthand about his creative process and the stories behind his iconic collaborations with visionaries like Arthur Elrod and John Lautner. Known as Mr. Lucite, Jones was one of the first to elevate acrylic and lucite into the realm of high design, changing the way we think about modern materials. His innovative approach to form and transparency made him a favorite among Hollywood’s elite, designing custom pieces for Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen, Janet Jackson, and more. Starting his career in the early 1960s, Jones defied traditional material norms and pushed boundaries at a time when plastic was considered cheap or disposable. Instead, he used it to craft elegant, futuristic furniture that merged industrial innovation with sculptural beauty. He opened his first showroom on Melrose Avenue at just 16, and by his 20s, his work was being commissioned by A-list celebrities, luxury hotels, and film studios. His pieces have been exhibited at the Smithsonian and are part of permanent museum collections around the world. Celebrated not only for their craftsmanship, but for their place in the evolution of American modernism. A true original, still redefining what’s possible in design. Team P.C. Architecture Visits — The Paulin House by Vladimir Ossipoff Tucked into the lush landscape of O‘ahu, the Paulin House, built in 1957, is a masterwork by Ossipoff. Designed for William Paulin, the house embodies Ossipoff’s deep respect for nature, climate-responsive architecture, and seamless indoor-outdoor living. The plan is organized around a central lanai, a transitional space that dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior, allowing the trade winds to naturally ventilate the home while blurring distinctions between shelter and open air. Deep eaves, post-and-beam construction, and extensive use of locally sourced lava rock and redwood articulate a material palette rooted in place, while simultaneously evoking the spare elegance of mid-century modernism. Spatial flow is key here, while rooms open to one another through sliding shoji-inspired screens, while windows diffuse light and garden views into every corner. Ossipoff’s architectural language balances Japanese influence with the traditions of the Hawaiian Islands. The Paulin House is more than a residence; it’s a case study in contextual modernism, a refined expression of how architecture can respond to climate, culture, and topography without compromise.
