We had the rare honor of spending time in his studio, hearing firsthand about his creative process and the stories behind his iconic collaborations with visionaries like Arthur Elrod and John Lautner. Known as Mr. Lucite, Jones was one of the first to elevate acrylic and lucite into the realm of high design, changing the way we think about modern materials. His innovative approach to form and transparency made him a favorite among Hollywood’s elite, designing custom pieces for Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen, Janet Jackson, and more. Starting his career in the early 1960s, Jones defied traditional material norms and pushed boundaries at a time when plastic was considered cheap or disposable. Instead, he used it to craft elegant, futuristic furniture that merged industrial innovation with sculptural beauty. He opened his first showroom on Melrose Avenue at just 16, and by his 20s, his work was being commissioned by A-list celebrities, luxury hotels, and film studios. His pieces have been exhibited at the Smithsonian and are part of permanent museum collections around the world. Celebrated not only for their craftsmanship, but for their place in the evolution of American modernism. A true original, still redefining what’s possible in design.
