We got called out for being dropshippers. Honestly? It’s a fair comment. You CAN find something that looks exactly like our Pomodoro Timer on AliExpress for ~$10. So what gives? Well here’s why it’s not what it seems… We first discovered it at the Canton Fair a couple of years ago. Minimal design. Two timers. It instantly felt like something that could work for our brand. But there was one big problem: It didn’t actually function as a Pomodoro timer. There was no automatic switch between focus and break. You had to manually restart it every time… which completely breaks your flow. So we worked directly with the original factory to rebuild the firmware and add continuous Pomodoro mode ourselves. The one feature that turns it from a basic timer into a legit focus tool. Yes, that means the case design isn’t ours. And we want to be fully transparent about that. But the internals? That’s where we went deep: → Rewriting the firmware → Stress-testing every batch → QA checks in both Shenzhen and Melbourne And yeah, cheaper versions exist. But at $10 on AliExpress, there’s no way those are quality tested or using the same parts we are. And without the Pomodoro mode? They’re just glorified kitchen timers. That first version taught us a lot. Now we’re building the Flow Timer completely from scratch: 100% original case, custom firmware, and feedback from thousands of users baked in. It’s almost ready. During COVID, my friends and I co-founded a page that helped people build their desk setups. One day we started desk pads and it changed everything. At the start, I was packing and shipping hundreds of orders from tiny apartment in Shanghai. Fast forward four years: I'm back in Melbourne. We have a warehouse, 200K followers, and a growing product line. What was meant to take 6 months… took over a year. Our keycap project became one of the most unexpectedly challenging (and rewarding) things we’ve ever worked on. It all started 3 years ago, when we visited a keycap factory in Dongguan: right in the middle of the custom keyboard boom. That visit lit a spark 🔥 and we set out to create keycaps in our signature sage green, plus a few other colors we loved. We thought we knew what we were getting into: double-shot, five-sided sublimation, all that. On paper, it made sense. In reality? it was a rabbit hole 🌀 Even getting a simple black key was a battle. With CMYK sublimation, black doesn’t just mean black. We kept getting keys with a weird blue tint… or an almost brown undertone. After too many rounds of color matching, we ended up scrapping the darker theme entirely. Instead, we pivoted to a softer, creamier base. Something that works beautifully with lighter keyboard builds. We made the keys slightly thicker for better acoustics, used long-lasting PBT material, and even developed our own minimal typeface. Oh, and the spacebar? We had warping issues during sublimation: so we redesigned it to be injection-molded in one solid piece. Problem solved 💪 For our modifiers and special keys, we went with single-sided sublimation. It’s easier to get the color just right during the injection molding stage, so we molded the keys in their final base color, then sublimated darker legends on top. This gave us better color accuracy and cleaner results. After all the rounds of tweaking, fine-tuning, and back-and-forth with the factory… we finally landed on something we’re really proud of. How one frustrating habit led to our most-loved productivity tool. 📝 I’ve always liked to-do lists. They're simple and sit nicely on your desk. But the part I struggled with? Seeing how much time I actually had in a day. Sure, I technically work 9–5… but between meetings, lunch, and the occasional post-dinner work sprint, I started wondering: how many real working blocks do I actually have? That’s when I discovered time blocking. It worked well for my style of working, but setting it up on Google Calendar every morning? Way too much effort. So I mocked up a simple grid in Figma, printed it out, and placed it next to my to-do list. That was the turning point. I could actually see what I had to do and how much time I had to do it. Suddenly, I was making smarter calls about my day. And just like that, Task & Time was born. 📝 Left side: To-do list ⏱ Right side: Time grid for blocking and tracking focus I even created a habit card to help me stay consistent. And Kenny? He helped design a stand to keep everything visible on your desk. We printed a few, bundled them up, and launched the kit. Paired with a Pomodoro timer, it became my favorite tool. The product that started it all: our desk pad. When we first began Minimal Desk Setups, we weren’t even a store. We had nothing to sell. We just made content to help people build better desk setups. Then one day, someone from our little community reached out and asked if there was a way to support us. Our content had helped him save so much time planning his workspace. We told him there was nothing to buy — but that message stuck with us. That was the spark 💡 At the time, felt desk pads were everywhere — but they came with creases, slid all over your desk, and just didn’t feel right. So we decided to fix that. Our first desk pad had anti-slip backing, a clean design, and a small embossed logo in the corner. We launched a preorder… and within 2 days, sold almost 1,000. Just from the community. From you!. 🙏 But the reality? We had no logistics team. Just Damo, packing orders out of his tiny 60sqm apartment in Shanghai while we cheered him on over Zoom. Fast forward to 2025: We’ve made a new generation of desk pads — blended with cashmere for a softer touch and enhanced durability. It’s got more wool, more craftsmanship, and less of the cheap plastic that wears out most felt pads. There’s nothing else like it. I look at mine every day and remember how far we’ve come. 5 years ago, we were just an Instagram page. Today, we’re here because of you. What started as a last-minute impulse turned into a product used by thousands. ⏳ About 2 years ago, I was wandering around the Canton Fair, on the very last day and came across this beautiful dual-use timer. Something about it caught my eye, and I thought: "this could work perfectly with the Pomodoro method." I took it home, used it for a couple of months, and while I loved the concept, switching between focus and rest manually got *really* annoying. Especially when you're doing 4–5 Pomodoros a day. It needed improvement. So we decided to stock it anyway, and to our surprise... it blew up 💥. We sold over 10,000 units in just 6 months 🤯 But I wasn’t done. I worked closely with the supplier, gave feedback, and we rebuilt the internals, from the PCB to the firmware while keeping the original look. What we ended up with is nothing like what you’ll find on AliExpress. Looks the same? Maybe. Functions the same? Not even close. We also heard feedback that it "felt" a little cheap — which sparked a whole new journey: the Flow Timer.
