What was meant to take 6 months… took over a year. Our keycap project became one of the most unexpectedly challenging (and rewarding) things we’ve ever worked on. It all started 3 years ago, when we visited a keycap factory in Dongguan: right in the middle of the custom keyboard boom. That visit lit a spark 🔥 and we set out to create keycaps in our signature sage green, plus a few other colors we loved. We thought we knew what we were getting into: double-shot, five-sided sublimation, all that. On paper, it made sense. In reality? it was a rabbit hole 🌀 Even getting a simple black key was a battle. With CMYK sublimation, black doesn’t just mean black. We kept getting keys with a weird blue tint… or an almost brown undertone. After too many rounds of color matching, we ended up scrapping the darker theme entirely. Instead, we pivoted to a softer, creamier base. Something that works beautifully with lighter keyboard builds. We made the keys slightly thicker for better acoustics, used long-lasting PBT material, and even developed our own minimal typeface. Oh, and the spacebar? We had warping issues during sublimation: so we redesigned it to be injection-molded in one solid piece. Problem solved 💪 For our modifiers and special keys, we went with single-sided sublimation. It’s easier to get the color just right during the injection molding stage, so we molded the keys in their final base color, then sublimated darker legends on top. This gave us better color accuracy and cleaner results. After all the rounds of tweaking, fine-tuning, and back-and-forth with the factory… we finally landed on something we’re really proud of.
