I could not possibly love this definition of “abundant life” more if I tried. If you want about a dozen more thoughtful, subversive, and hopeful insights like this one, you need to join me on The GoodHard Story Podcast this week. We’re getting into what happens when our old Christian definitions stop working, and why that’s not such a bad thing.

Faith and certainty are not the same thing
Faith and certainty are not the same thing. In fact, I think faith involves a lot more doubt than certainty. My life has pretty much cured me of pretending I have all the answers. Grief, heartbreak, and unmet expectations have a way of undoing our frameworks of reality—and that includes the way we understand God, the Bible, and our faith communities. Friends, on the other side of all my certainty I found something so much better than answeres. I learned mystery and doubt aren’t something to fear or feel ashamed about. This week, my guest on The GoodHard Story Podcast is the remarkable Erin Hicks Moon. She’s a podcaster, writer and beloved spokeswoman for those of us who are tired of pretending to have all the answers. This conversation is SO good and it’s available wherever you like to listen.

20 years after our first visit to Banff, Canada, we returned last weekend — now with two kids AND a wheelchair — and had the privilege of cheering on the incredible Bible translation efforts of @illuminations12vc. We ate fondue at the same restaurant from decades ago, took a nail-biting gondola ride and delighted in some of the most gorgeous mountain vistas alongside old and new friends. It was the sweetest reminder of Psalm 27:13 “I would despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living.” And we did. 🤍 #HopeHealsTravels #HopeHealsFamily #DontWaitToCelebrate #HopeHeals #TreasuresInTheDark #Illuminations

My grandmother Manda was my very best friend in the world
My grandmother Manda was my very best friend in the world. I had slumber parties at her house most weekends of my childhood and we had a phone date literally every other day of my life, up until my stroke when I was 26. My dear Manda was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s a few years later and our bittersweet, years-long goodbye began. Aging is a privilege and I’m determined to treat it like the gift it is. But the gift of aging comes with complex challenges and unavoidable realities, like memory loss. Dear listeners, so many of you are caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Some of you are facing a memory loss diagnosis yourselves. I want to offer some encouragement and connect you with some practical wisdom so you can navigate this tender time well. This week on the podcast I'm talking with Megan Carnarius, an Alzheimer’s expert doing the hard and holy work of dignifying the experiences of people living with memory loss. I pray this conversation gives you fresh hope for your future and the futures of the ones you love. It's waiting for you on your favorite podcast platform 🩵

Today is Katherine Lived Day (4/22), the anniversary of the day after my stroke
Today is Katherine Lived Day (4/22), the anniversary of the day after my stroke. It’s a day of goodness and gratitude, yet it remains overwhelmingly bittersweet even 17 years later. The existence of a Katherine Lived Day means there was a day I almost died. For every April 22nd there is an April 21st. It’s easy to forget that my second-chance life was never guaranteed. 17 years ago, we couldn’t have fathomed that April 22nd would be a day to celebrate. In fact, every path of reason predicted I would be dead. While I underwent brain surgery, my loved ones hurtled toward the grief of an unknown future. While I did survive, April 21st was a day of death for much of me. This year the anniversary of my stroke fell right after Holy Week. I’ve found such comfort in the parallels between my story and Jesus’. There was a day when Jesus died, leaving behind beloved friends who didn’t know the end of the story. They never could have imagined that Friday would be called “good.” Then Sunday came. On my own “resurrection day,”I didn’t miraculously rise from the hospital bed. I didn’t even speak or open my eyes. “Living” looked like wiggling my toes. Nothing spectacular, no stones rolled away. But those wiggling toes were the slow-motion start of a new life. The unlikely beginning of a ministry. My first act of rebellion against death. This year, we observed the weird, sad anniversary of April 21st with a YES day for me. It’s become a healing tradition—another rebellion—that helps me remember that while so much of of my old life died, abundant goodness remains. (But let’s be real, I deferred to my sons for most of the day’s decisions—like massive hamburgers for lunch. Although I did insist on a family viewing of the 1975 film The Hiding Place, ha!) Today, Katherine Lived Day, I returned to the work of leading my team at Hope Heals. To the calling of suffering alongside hurting people. To the business of making sacred spaces for people who don’t have a place. My rebellion continues. For as long as I live, I’m determined to remain in rhythm with Jesus: Good Friday followed by Easter. Death followed by resurrection. Pain followed by purpose. Hurt followed by hope.

“Invisible wheelchairs” are those unseen parts of our stories that are holding us back from the most abundant versions of our lives
“Invisible wheelchairs” are those unseen parts of our stories that are holding us back from the most abundant versions of our lives. I’ve processed and shared a LOT of insights from my second-chance life, but no idea has resonated more deeply and widely with you all than this one. Maybe your invisible wheelchair is shame, doubt, worry, loneliness, or insecurity. We are ALL disabled by something. As a literally physically disabled person, I’m dealing with invisible wheelchairs that have absolutely nothing to do with my stroke. For better or worse, there’s plenty of dysfunction to go around (HA!) and I’m letting you into what feels most disabling to me these days. On this episode of The GoodHard Story Podcast, my teammate Caroline and I are working through the invisible wheelchairs in our own lives and the opportunities they offer us, if we have eyes to see them. Tune into this episode to hear how you can… 🩵 Identify your invisible wheelchairs 🩵Find creativity within your unique constraints 🩵De-personalize and get curious about your invisible wheelchairs 🩵Show up as the person you are today, not the one you thought you’d be If you’ve needed language for the inner stuff that's been disabling you, this episode is for you!
