The Pacific Coast League (PCL) featured clubs from up and down the west coast. But the teams sported monikers straight out of central casting: Hollywood Stars, Sacramento Solons, San Francisco Seals, Portland Beavers, and Vancouver Mounties, just to name a few. But the crown jewel of the PCL was the LA Angels. Formed in 1903 as charter members of the PCL, the club was bought by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. in 1921. Not long after, he built the first Wrigley Field at 42nd and Avalon. The original Angels weren’t connected to the later American League expansion team, but they were a powerhouse in the PCL. The 1903, 1934, and 1943 Angels of the PCL were ranked among the 100 greatest minor league teams of all time. The 1934 team, with a 137–50 record, was ranked as the number one minor league team.   We’re proud to celebrate the teams, players, and lasting legacy of the Pacific Coast League and the original LA Angels with our newest collection. At its best, baseball embodies the most American of ideals: In the land of opportunity, hard work and fair play are all anyone needs to succeed. The truth is that for Black players in the era of baseball’s self-imposed color line, the opportunity to succeed at the major league level would be just a dream until 1947.  Until then, Negro Leagues Baseball gave them a chance to show the world what they could do. Even in the oppressive shadow of segregation, the Negro Leagues gave Black athletes a chance to play the game they loved, make their own history and lead the way to a new world of opportunities. Last year, the state of Michigan officially designated today, May 2, as “Negro Leagues Day” to honor the date of the first Negro National League game in 1920. We echo that sentiment, and salute all of the teams and players whose indomitable spirits and love of the game led them to break down barriers and change the course of history. In baseball, in America, and around the world.

On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson stepped onto the grass at Ebbets Field with number 42 on his back and the eyes of the world upon him. Before he took his first swing he’d already made history, crossing baseball’s “color line” and changing the game forever. In 10 years as a player, he’d rack up a .313 batting average, 972 runs scored, 1,563 hits, and 200 stolen bases.  But the true measure of his greatness goes far beyond the baseball diamond. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. himself said “Jackie Robinson made my success possible. Without him, I would never have been able to do what I did.” Today, we join with all of Major League Baseball and fans worldwide to pay tribute to number 42 — to his courage, his character, his toughness, and all that he accomplished on and off the field.
