Our team visited Araku Valley last December to reconnect with the incredible women of Vanmaya FPO, who have been crafting exceptional coffee with dedication and care. Over the years, we’ve worked together to enhance their processing capabilities —from a small unit to a well-equipped wet mill with fermentation barrels and controlled drying. We’re excited to support them in setting up a solar polyhouse for even better quality this season. One of the highlights? A cupping session where the community got to taste the very coffee they processed. Many of them had never sipped black coffee before, but seeing their curiosity and excitement was truly special. Moments like these remind us why we do what we do. Beyond Vanmaya, we also visited two more FPOs we’ve partnered with over the past five years. By investing in better equipment and post-harvest infrastructure, they’ve been able to improve efficiency while staying true to their traditions. Every cup tells a story, and this one is about progress, passion, and people.

At Kalledevarapura Estate, surrounded by 800-year-old jungle trees, we embarked on an experiment that had been years in the making. For the first time, we introduced Kombucha fermentation to coffee — an idea born from countless home brews and a curiosity for how its lively cultures might transform flavour. Meanwhile, Shravan, the producer’s son, was experimenting with Lactic Acid Bacteria and speciality yeasts — each known to elevate sweetness, acidity, and aroma. Under the evening sky, 1320 kg of coffee cherries were carefully processed, and split into 11 experimental micro-lots. The barrels sat for 72 hours, each batch infused with different microorganisms — some thriving in anoxic conditions, others adapting to oxygen-rich environments. The Kombucha batch? Potent beyond belief, but full of promise! Now, we wait. The cherries rest on raised beds, drying slowly, their flavours developing. By April, the results will be in, and we’ll gather once more — roasters, farmers, and coffee lovers — to cup and taste the art of Kalledevarapura coffee.

At Kerehaklu Estate, coffee is more than a crop — it’s a conversation and a culture. We arrived to a warm welcome from Pranoy and Ajoy Thipaiah, just as the day’s harvest was being sorted and weighed. We walked through the estate, discussing the season’s challenges, from labour shortages to experimental fermentations. Inside the fermentery, Pranoy shared his vision — moving away from commercial yeasts to cultivate Indigenous strains from Kerehaklu’s own coffee plants, ensuring each batch stays true to its origins. Then came the cupping — six samples, each telling a story. The washed lots stood out with their signature Mosambi sweetness, while a bright, citrusy natural reminded us of pink lemonade. By the end, our choices were clear: two washed, one natural.
