Celebrating Mothers Day: Honoring Maternal Bonds
It’s no wonder that Mother’s Day falls right in the heart of Spring. This time of year we’re surrounded by new life —mostly of the four-legged variety— and seeing the bond between cow and calf, mare and foal, fox and kit, reminds us to give a little extra appreciation to the maternal figures in our life to let them know how important and special they are. Happy Mother’s Day to mothers of all kinds, two-legged and four-legged alike!

“Yellow, Amarillo, Brick House — all names that I’ve called that horse
“Yellow, Amarillo, Brick House — all names that I’ve called that horse. He’s short and stocky, hangs his lower lip, just a chill palomino gelding. He’s the most solid horse in my string. He can do any job anywhere without ever losing his cool. If I have a dicey job to do — a prolapsed cow, a high-headed neighbor yearling, a choking bull — I choose Yellow. He’s lazy by nature, but has this switch you can flip on when you need to get after it. I call him a brick house because when you catch whatever you’ve roped he just plants himself and holds. Doesn’t matter how heavy, or if they’re crashing through brush, or if I have to jump off to tie them down, he holds them without the slightest bit of nerves. He’s also a horse you can put a first-time rider on and he’ll take care of them all day. That’s the hardest part of having a good horse like Yellow, he’s my go-to-guy but I know that I have to give him up to the interns and less experienced riders that often join us. There’s long periods of time that I don’t ride Yellow. But then I’ll get on him and it’s such a good reminder of how great that horse is.”  Mike (@mikegio93), manager of the Frying Pan Ranch in Texas, on one of his most trusted horses to doctor cattle with, Yellow. #HorsesOfRanchlands Photos by @claudia.elise @brunomangas

Our New York City event is just three weeks away and we are thrilled to be partnering with Justin Borucki (@justinborucki) to offer tintype photography at the event. After a successful two-decade career as a celebrity portrait photographer, Justin made a pivot after discovering the wet plate collodion tintype process—a craft dating back to the 1850s. A tintype is made by an entirely handmade process with origins dating back to the 1850s. Metal plates are sensitized, exposed, and developed one at at time. The image is made in silver and will last many generations. To book a session, follow the link in our bio. We are so excited to see you all there! Photos by @justinborucki

“People are here, we’re part of the system, we’re another animal in the landscape
“People are here, we’re part of the system, we’re another animal in the landscape. And just like bees and beavers and pollinators can enhance and enrich biodiversity and ecological productivity, people can too. It ends up being more about how do we do a better job being in relationship with nature rather than always trying to keep ourselves apart from nature.” From our conversation last year with Western Land Owners Alliance founder Leslie Allison (@westernlandowners) on the Ranchlands Podcast.

“With the coming of winter, the weather grows much colder and food becomes scarce for many animals
“With the coming of winter, the weather grows much colder and food becomes scarce for many animals. They have three possible survival strategies in winter: hibernate, migrate, or tolerate, or sometimes a combination of these. Cold-blooded animals descend into a form of hibernation called brumation, where their body temperature and metabolism decline and most bodily functions cease as ambient temperature falls. On the other hand, warm-blooded mammals and birds have thermoregulating processes that generate body heat internally, maintaining a set body temperature despite the variation in the outside temperature. While this works up to a point, with extreme exposure, the animal’s muscles begin to shiver to generate extra heat. Past that point, uncontrolled hypothermia sets in, and the body’s temperature drops, which could be lethal.   A chickadee only weighs about 11 grams, or roughly the weight of a ballpoint pen. At first, it might seem unlikely that such a small bird with a high metabolism could find enough energy to stay warm in winter. Indeed, a chickadee has a rather slim margin for survival. Yet, somehow, many of them manage to survive in temperatures even lower than 40 degrees below zero at night.” To learn how chickadees survive through the winter and reshape their brains to adapt to the cold, follow the link in bio and read the full article written by @shanemorrison47 for the current edition of the #RanchlandsReview.

Assistance with calving is generally straightforward — if the heifer stops progressing for too long in her labor process we might step in to give her a little extra help
Assistance with calving is generally straightforward — if the heifer stops progressing for too long in her labor process we might step in to give her a little extra help. But occasionally we find a malpresentation with the calf in the birth canal that requires a bigger intervention. This can take several forms, with only one of the calf’s legs emerging while the other leg remains folded under, or two front hooves emerging but the head is folded back. Or, as pictured here, a backwards calf trying to come out hindlegs-first. If caught quickly, most of these malpresentations can be rectified by carefully repositioning the calf and pulling in conjunction with the heifer’s contractions until it is all the way free. It’s tough work (mostly for the heifer), but extremely rewarding when we are able to help a heifer deliver and pair up with her first calf.
