@greg_james said something this week that we haven’t been able to stop thinking about. “Optimisation is killing fun. We absolutely need to rail against that. Phones down today. Go and have a nice time. And don’t log it.” He was talking about the wellness optimisation conversation that has been building for a while now. The body is genuinely fascinating and nutrition genuinely matters. But there is a version of this that has somehow turned joy into a threat. That has made pleasure feel like a failure state. That has replaced the question “how do I feel?” with “what do my metrics say?”. We live in an era of self-abandonment, where women have been taught to squeeze self-care out of their lives; to fit it all in, to put themselves last, to mistake nourishment for indulgence. And then optimisation culture comes along and turns the bits of joy that remain into data points to feel guilty about. When we are already overwhelmed, doing more is rarely the answer. The things that have always supported human health; whole food, sleep, movement, connection and rest, are the foundation. Wellness can be overwhelming, but it’s not a performance or a perfect checklist. It’s the ongoing, quite ordinary practice of paying attention to yourself and responding with a little more care. Try to stay curious rather than overwhelmed. Ask honest questions. Start with one thing. Give it time. And adjust as you go. And just for now - know that our needs shift with our seasons, our stress, our life stages. What matters most today might not be what matters most in six months.
