Doesn’t flopping down in a snowbank sound pretty good right now? Legendary photographer Marion Post Wolcott’s “Smuggler’s Notch” will take you there no matter the temperature outside. In 1807, President Thomas Jefferson enacted the Embargo Act, halting trade with Great Britain and Canada. This posed serious challenges for Vermonters, who began smuggling goods through a natural mountain pass, now famously known as “Smuggler’s Notch.” Over a century later, Wolcott captured adventurous skiers traversing that area–Mount Mansfield and the Sterling Range–whether they were in action or, like here, in total repose. The area wouldn’t become an official resort until 1956, but locals had long been skiing the slopes. Wolcott was ready for them!
