Artist Joan LeMay (@joanlemay) likens her portraits of Mister Rogers to religious iconography, because the giant of public television is a modern icon of empathy, calm, and moral clarity. In times like these when more than just public television is being decimated, his famous advice to “look for the helpers” comes in…handy. Fred Rogers taught generations of children (and adults) that they were seen, valued, and loved just as they are, and LeMay captures this enduring legacy, explaining “I grew up seated just a few inches from the TV set, receiving care from Mister Rogers... learning life lessons... hearing that I was okay just the way I was.” For many, his presence was like that of a saint or beloved family member—someone whose image brings real comfort in difficult times.

These days, wouldn’t we all kind of like to be…imaginary beings? Or at least exist in a world that isn’t so jarring. NYC-based artist Johanna Goodman’s series “The Catalogue of Imaginary Beings” was launched in 2015 and now comprises over 200 plates. These vibrant, intricate figures—hybrids of human, object, and ornament—explore the roles of the individual in fashion, history, art, and collective cultural memory. Drawing inspiration from Magical Realism, Surrealism, and Symbolism, Goodman’s beings are steeped in references to talismans, idols, totems, and the layered material world that surrounds us. Each character is a composite, embodying archetypes such as the warrior, the dreamer, the laborer, and the vulnerable soul. They echo how these identities have been historically portrayed in art, literature, and commerce—both universal and deeply personal in tone. They take us into the sphere of dreams while reminding us who the heck we actually are.

It’s Jason Polan’s birthday. Happy birthday, bud. I’m back in Brooklyn now, but spent last weekend in the Bay Area. In many years previous, Jason would have come stay with us for the SF Art Book Fair and other shenanigans. We’d go for ice cream. Steve would make pizza in the backyard. “Nice leoparding!” Jason would comment, admiring the swirls of char on the bottom of the pie. Steve’s never been prouder. Jason would sketch at our dining table. This year, we were hosting visitors from Germany. They were intent on seeing Fisherman’s Wharf, which lately seems to have a proliferation of magnet shops for some reason. There was a wall packed full of soft sculpture ones: bananas, donuts, hamburgers: all were nearly the size of a fist and discomfitingly squishy in your hand. I would have bought Jason the hamburger one, or at least sent him a goofy photo where I pretended to bite into it. A few doors down there was a shop with those mini versions of California license plates. The one emblazoned JASON jumped out at me immediately. All this is to say that more than five years on, I still miss my friend so much. I still cry about him, and the unfairness of it all. I still have moments where I catch a glimpse of someone who I’m absolutely sure is him on the street, and feel my heart flush with the love I feel for him. I see things, or read things and want to call and tell him about it. I still do all these things, and always will. It is something that will always be tinged with sadness, and loss, but over time it’s also transformed into something I (not a religious person) can only describe as holy. I feel a gratitude to have shared so much with him, to still have him so much with me. To be able to remember his voice, the exact way in which a certain tooth was a little crooked, the way his fingers curved as he held a pen in his hand to make a drawing. All the things he loved and hated, or was curious about. What a privilege to have known him so well, and to have wandered the world with him as much as we did. It wasn’t for long enough, but gosh, I’m so grateful to have had the chance to be alive with him, to love him and to be loved by him. — Jen

Doesn’t flopping down in a snowbank sound pretty good right now? Legendary photographer Marion Post Wolcott’s “Smuggler’s Notch” will take you there no matter the temperature outside. In 1807, President Thomas Jefferson enacted the Embargo Act, halting trade with Great Britain and Canada. This posed serious challenges for Vermonters, who began smuggling goods through a natural mountain pass, now famously known as “Smuggler’s Notch.” Over a century later, Wolcott captured adventurous skiers traversing that area–Mount Mansfield and the Sterling Range–whether they were in action or, like here, in total repose. The area wouldn’t become an official resort until 1956, but locals had long been skiing the slopes. Wolcott was ready for them!

Chatting with photographer extraordinaire Joseph O. Holmes (@josephoholmes) is always a treat–his work is a study in presence, light, and captured time. Holmes’s work is held in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Museum of the City of New York, the Museum of the Moving Image, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He has received numerous accolades, including a Curator’s Commendation from the Houston Center for Photography, first prize in MPLS Photo Center’s Portraits Exhibition, and honors from Silver Eye Gallery, PX3 Paris, and Photographic Center Northwest. He has also been a Critical Mass/Photolucida Top 50 and Finalist. No big deal, right? Ha! We got to ask Holmes a few questions about his work: (Photo credit for portraits of Holmes: Aoki @aokihirotsugu) 1) You so deftly capture the feeling of the landscapes you capture—looking at your work, you can often hear the quiet, feel the temperature, sense the breeze or lack thereof, etcetera. How do you feel when it's the right moment to click the camera? “I look for utter simplicity in a landscape—as in my snowy series Urban Wilderness, set in Prospect Park. I've never been able to wrap my photographic eye around a landscape that's overflowing with detail (though I do love Lee Friedlander's crazy chaotic nature images). I don't want to make my images hard work for the viewer. I'd rather they ease you in. That simplicity aspect alone helps convey the mood of the scene, the depth, even the temperature.”

Is it really summer if you don’t make it to the beach at least once? It’s no wonder that this liminal space between land and sea has attracted humans since time immemorial–we are animals who are drawn to the water, after all. We’re also communal–and outside areas like beaches, parks, playgrounds, and hiking trails are really crucial to our individual and collective wellbeing. Art capturing the calm, peace and escape of the beach helps bring all of this knowledge inside, as well as great memories (and, in the winter, the promise that this very season is en route).

“It’s the color I search for. It leads me,” says photographer Katie Baum—and that pursuit is vividly felt in “Frozen” and the story behind it. On a hot, sticky morning in Sayulita, Baum wandered the quiet streets, drawn instinctively to vibrant hues: a pile of dirt against a turquoise wall, a bright purple blanket draped across a concrete bed. She found her subject here–glistening, handmade popsicles stacked in elegant rows, frozen and radiant, waiting to be devoured–and froze them in time. Originally from New York City and raised in Baltimore, Baum studied art and photography at Guilford College. She began her career shooting the back roads of North Carolina in black and white, but quickly shifted focus, captivated by color’s power to shape and transform an image. Her work, exhibited nationally, is conceptual at its core—a balance of observation and invention, grounded in real moments and made radiant through her own vivid lens.
