There is an enviable sense of cool that carries through everything designer Caroline Belhumeur does. There’s the low-slung 1970s Italian-influenced interiors of her family’s light-filled, lushly gardened perch; the crisp, comfortable lines of the clothing she designs for the American casual luxury brand @vince, where she has been creative director and head of design since 2017. On the morning that we met I found myself quizzing her on everything from exactly what she was wearing (navy cashmere crewneck sweater, dark olive denim pant, black strappy leather hiking-inspired sandal, all Vince) to where she found her couch pillows (she had them made from green striped mudcloth she picked up at a flea market) or her Roger Capron tiled coffee tables (1stdibs, mostly). “Or was it at an auction?” Belhumeur asks her artist husband, Christopher Belhumeur. Belhumeur attended London’s Kingston College to study fashion. During her last year, Calvin Klein came through on a scouting tour for new design talent and handpicked her to come work with him in New York. Belhumeur put on her graduate show, took a week off, and flew to New York to start the rest of her life. It was not exactly an auspicious start. “This was the beginning of the eighties,” she said, and she had booked her flight to Newark, meaning her first introduction to the city was actually via the Port Authority bus terminal. “There were cars burning on the side of the street,” she laughs now. “It was madness, but I loved it.” Fast forward a few jobs and years and California came calling in the form of a creative director role at @vince. The Belhumeurs began looking for houses in Los Angeles, landing first in Laurel Canyon making their way east to the Hollywood hills, and this appealingly private modern white home, with its sprawling sightlines and clever use of outdoor space, which essentially doubles its footprint. “When I came here and then started looking for houses, I realized that I loved that L.A. had this sort of Mediterranean feel about it.” Step into the sunkissed home of @carolinebelhumeur with writer @atcodinha and photographer @advli in print in our Issue Ten.
