Photos were recently released of a vaquita mother and calf surfacing in the northern Gulf of California. Fewer than ten left. One of them just had a calf. The vaquita is the world's smallest porpoise — about five feet long, dark eye-patches, lives in a single small stretch of the northern Cortez. It's been in freefall since the 1990s when gillnet fishing for totoaba (a black-market fish) started tangling them as bycatch. The footage from Sea Shepherd and Mexican survey teams isn't luck. It's acoustic buoys, patrol rotations, and drone operators logging hours over the same coordinates until something surfaced. Literally. The material thing keeping vaquitas alive right now is ghost gear removal — nets pulled from the water column before animals hit them. That's the variable. The CITES review happening now is asking whether the refuge protections are real on the water or just on paper. Seven to ten individuals. Still calving. Giving us hope. #vaquita #marineconservation #ghostgear #gulfofcalifornia #seashepherd
