HAPPY NATIONAL SKILLED TRADES DAY! We asked some of our favorite teachers shaping the next generation for the best advice they'd give to someone coming up in the skilled trades today. Here's what they had to say: "Never stop learning, and don’t be afraid to start with trade school or an apprenticeship program. Surround yourself with experienced people, learn from them, and always take pride in your work. I’ve seen so many of my graduates go on to own successful businesses and build great lives for themselves and their families. Do the right thing, even when no one’s watching—and remember to have fun along the way. Life’s too short not to enjoy the journey.” Corey Menning Assistant Professor l Program Coordinator Construction Technology IOWA LAKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE "My dad was a contractor and my mom was a teacher. I tell everyone if you mix those two together you get a construction teacher, which I am. I've been teaching skilled trades for over 20 years. As for advice, I'd say there are many excellent career opportunities in the trades, but success requires more than just interest—it takes consistent attendance, a positive attitude, strong effort, a willingness to learn, attention to detail, and grit." Cory Torppa Construction/ Engineering/ Manufacturing Teacher CTE Director Kalama High School "As a kid I always enjoyed building with Legos and similar toys. I would also try and make things out of scrap wood from our garage, like bike ramps and forts. As I got older I would work for contractors when I was home from college, because I liked the variety in work, plus plenty of opportunities to be outside. The more I did the more I wanted to learn. I really encourage anyone interested in getting into skilled trades to do so. There is so much opportunity in the industry right now. The tools, materials and technologies that are going into our builds are getting better every day. It's definitely an industry that can allow you to grow and bring in a good income."
