Today, Jennifer talks to Dr Deirdre Fitzgerald (fitzgeraldprivateclinic.com) about the things we can do to improve and maintain the health of our bones. Dr Deirdre, who is a Consultant Surgeon and Aesthetic Medical Doctor, suggests that you make sure you are getting enough calcium, you need to make sure that you can absorb it, that you have adequate vitamin D coming in through your diet or supplements. If there is a need to, you could also request a DEXA scan from your GP, which would show whether your bony stock is good and whether or not you are osteopenic or osteoporotic. Another time to look at your bone health is during menopause. HRT has a very good role in helping bone to be maintained during this time. From a facial perspective, be friends with your dentist. Your teeth will help you to maintain your face for a long time. If you do lose teeth and it’s within your means, you could look at getting a dental implant. All in all, diet, common sense and dental hygiene have a big part to play in keeping our bones healthy – and the earlier you start to develop good habits in these areas, the better!
