Noseride from the Top + Fins Rule! #tiptimetuesday Often times, one of the most available times for a noseride will be straight from the takeoff as exemplified here perfectly! Notice how directly after popping up, she makes a turn to stay at the top of the wave instead of dropping all the way down the face before making the turn. This allows her to stay at the top of the wave where the noseride section is available. There’s a lot of nuance in being able to recognize noseride sections. This ability comes with time, paying close attention to others, and a lot of trial and error. If you’re confident in your cross stepping, then start looking for this initial noseride section! In order for noserides to be available at all, we have to have a fin configuration and placement that allows for it. There are no specific guidelines with fins, as there’s such a wide variety that works for different people, but there are general concepts that make noseriding more difficult. Mainly, make sure your fin isn’t too small (especially as a single fin). A good way to tell if your fin is too small is if the board is really bouncy when you’re near the tail or if the board keeps slipping away from you as you get closer to the nose. For me personally, I use a general size comparison as a starting place — if my board is 9’2, then I’ll Look for a fin between 9.25 and 9.5”. If my board is 9’5, then I like a fin at least 9.5” but no smaller. Some people can make smaller fins work for noseriding, but if you’re learning to noseride, having a bit bigger fin will help with stability! Fin theory is a massive subject unto itself, but it’s important to at least think about the size basics, as a fin can be just as limiting to our progression as a board!
