Our goal from the start of the trip is to not only tell stories of the indigenous people , but also be fully immersed into their culture. The Tigwahanon Tribe gave us just that. We were invited 46 miles deep into the jungle to meet the Tigwahanon people. Being ritually accepted onto their lands and given the opportunity to experience their culture is something we will never forget. One of their oldest traditions is scarification, a form of tattooing. It’s meant to signify identity, maturity, courage and spiritual beliefs. Almaciga Sap is the tribes alternative to ink. Lighting the sap on fire, collecting the soot from the sap on a pot and rubbing it into the open wound to create a mark that tells the story of their land and culture.
