Krishna has shaped the artistic imagination of the Indian subcontinent, across regions and languages, finding expression in sculpture, painting, textiles, music, poetry and dance. The Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita establish his many forms and teachings, while traditions such as Odisha’s tribhanga and temple stri-vesha reveal an ease with transformation and feminine adornment. His stories live on in Sattriya, Odissi and Kathakali, in Chamba rumals, Pichwai and Varanasi brocades, in Mirabai’s poetry and the Ras Leela of Braj. Janmashtami arrives with the monsoon, a season of rain, harvest and renewal, within an older calendar shaped by the rhythms of nature and ritual. Krishna’s birth is marked through midnight worship, music, dance, procession and storytelling. Across centuries, these traditions have given the same figure innumerable artistic languages, allowing Krishna to be sung, woven, painted and performed in forms particular to each place and its people.
