Artistry, technical mastery, and custodianship collide with the making of our rōketsuzome noren.  A specialist wax and water dyeing process, rōketsuzome originated in Kyoto 1200 years ago. By dipping linen in wax, crinkling it underwater after it hardens, and allowing dye to settle in the disruptions of the wax coating, the textile takes on a one-of-a-kind abstract pattern.  Today, our maker-partners Shobien studio are the last remaining facility to specialise in the dyeing technique in Kyoto. Impassioned by the need to preserve Japanese material heritage, they work tirelessly executing feats of technical mastery alongside passing these techniques on to future generations.  At POJ Studios we are proud to support Shobien in their role as custodians of this millennium-old craft.
