“A canoe-assisted ski touring trip into the Tetons has become an annual spring tradition for us. Canoes are great for access and seeing wildlife, but it’s an elegant experience just gliding through smooth, glassy water … and you can bring lots of decadent food and drink for lakeside camping—a huge bonus when you’re climbing and skiing objectives like the Falling Glacier on Mount Moran, one of the Tetons’ finest. Which brings us to one of the most interesting parts of the trip: the big bull elk that walked right into our camp while we were drinking margaritas. Initially we took his behavior as bizarre ‘curiosity,’ but it slowly developed into aggression and eventually forced us into our canoes for safety. Later, we learned that bull elk had been harassing campers all summer—the Jackson Hole News ran at least one story about it.” —Beau Fredlund Photos: Beau Fredlund (@bfredlund)
