The Battle of Attu took place from May 11-30, 1943. Attu had been invaded by Japanese troops as planers believed control of the Aleutians would prevent any US attacks from Alaska. On May 11, The US 7th Division made amphibious landings on Attu in order to retake the island. The Japanese were well entrenched, and the terrain was tough. This battle was the only one fought in snowy conditions during the Pacific campaign. The battle raged on for more than two weeks and ended when the remaining Japanese troops perished after leading a banzai charge to break through US lines, resulting in hand-to-hand combat. Of the 2,900 Japanese troops, 2,872 were killed and 28 were captured. #ninelineapparel #onthisday #thisdayinhistory #attu #usarmy #ww2 #ww2history #militaryhistory #ushistory #soldiers #veterans
