Bat out of Hell E5 6a ✅ E5, on lead, placing all my own gear, blind? 👍 Never in a million years did I think I’d be able to say I’d done that. Even when I had limited vision, a climb that hard was way beyond my comprehension. Let alone years later when I had lost the last of my sight. It was meant to be my winter project, my first foray into head-pointing and trying something a bit harder. But the weather was so rubbish over winter, I only started trying it later in March. On my 13th lead attempt, success! In some ways a good route for me - it’s reasonably safe and I’m tall, which is useful. But a route with multiple dynamic moves… when you’re blind... not so good. Dynamic movement has never been my strong suit, and likely never will be, so the fact that I found a way to get an E5 that doesn’t suit me perfectly, is mind blowing. What is possible if we stop measuring ourselves by what we lack and focus instead on the strengths we have? I’m curious to find out. This process has shown me that I can certainly climb harder than this, and that makes me smile. Forever grateful to Molly, the most supportive and best climbing partner to have by my side.
