A Tail of 10 Groomers. Doodle Dog Series: Vol. 01 If you own (or are considering adopting) a doodle… read this. I’ve taken Barkley home and cried after multiple $100+ grooming appointments. Not because anyone was mean, but because they didn’t understand him, his breed nor his hair. He’s been clipped into a schnauzer. Shaved into a show poodle. Buzzed into Lloyd & Harry’s love child. Sent home with uneven ears, bald spots, and his tail was shaved so short it took a year to grow back. Sadly, as a puppy, he experienced a too-close sanitary trim that had him afraid of the groomer for a while so deciding to search for a new one came with a lot of hesitation. Because here’s the truth: Poodle mixes are not just “small curly dogs.”And not every groomer knows how to style them properly. *That doesn’t make someone bad. But it may make them wrong for your dog. What I’ve learned about choosing a groomer the hard way: • Look at their social. Do their doodles look balanced — no shaved snouts or copy + paste cuts? • Ask about breed-specific styling. If they can’t explain the difference between a poodle and a Cavapoo/Goldendoodle/Maltipoo cut… keep looking. • Pricing should reflect size + coat condition. Complex coats are not “one price.” And then there’s maintenance at home.
