One of the most damaging myths still holding youth players back from reaching their full potential is this: “Strength training will stunt their growth...” You’ve probably heard it. And if you're a parent, it’s completely understandable to be cautious about anything that might interfere with your child’s development. But here’s the reality... There is zero scientific evidence that properly designed resistance training stunts growth. In fact, it’s the opposite. The idea came from outdated observations of short-statured weightlifters, but their height was actually a performance advantage, not a result of the training itself. Shorter athletes tend to have favourable limb proportions for Olympic lifting, allowing them to move the bar a shorter distance and maintain better leverage. This makes them more efficient and powerful in lifts, which is why many elite lifters are naturally shorter – it's genetics and sport selection, not training that made them that way. The American College of Sports Medicine states: “No scientific evidence indicates that participation in a well-designed youth resistance training programme will stunt the growth of children or harm their developing skeleton. In fact, childhood seems to be the best time to participate in strength-building activities…” Why does this matter for football?
