On Tasso Island, Sierra Leone, all five schools were without safe water. The island has 20 wells, but each is affected by a combination of saltwater intrusion, iron-ore runoff, and organic contaminants. SierrAfrica Diaspora Connect and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health reached out to LifeStraw to help address these issues, and we responded by installing Escape High-Flow Purifiers across all five schools, bringing safe drinking water to 539 children. Teachers and LifeStraw Prefects were trained on daily use, cleaning, and maintenance, so the water stays safe well past installation day, and LifeStraw will be providing replacement filters to keep the safe water flowing.
