Did you know that mushrooms launch their spores using a mechanism that is so elegant and sophisticated it took scientists decades to fully understand? It’s called Buller’s Drop and we hope you are just as amazed to learn about it as we were 🍄 Here’s how it works: A spore produces hygroscopic compounds - including the sugar alcohol mannitol - which pull water vapour out of the surrounding air. This causes tiny droplets of water to condense on the spore. Two droplets form close together: a larger one called Buller’s drop at the base of the spore, and a thin film or smaller droplet on the spore surface. A hydrophobic region keeps them separated as they grow. Over several seconds to about a minute, the droplets slowly increase in size. Then they touch. The moment they merge, surface tension rapidly shifts the centre of mass. The stored surface energy converts into motion, catapulting the spore off its stalk and launching it about 0.1–1 mm into the surrounding airflow — with accelerations that can reach around 10,000 G!! 🤯 For context, a fighter jet pilot experiences about 9 G in a sharp turn. No muscles, no biological springs… just surface tension and water. And here’s where things get even more interesting: Those same hygroscopic compounds can continue absorbing moisture in the atmosphere after release. Because of this, fungal spores may act as cloud condensation nuclei, meaning they could help water droplets form in clouds — potentially influencing rainfall. Fungi already build vast underground networks connecting plants and soil ecosystems. Now evidence suggests their spores may also play a small role in shaping the atmosphere above us. 🍄🌧️ #BullersDrop #Mycology #FungiScience #Mushrooms #NatureIsWild
