Today marks the 51st Anniversary of the release of McQ (1974).⁣ During the six weeks on location in Seattle, Washington, Duke lived aboard the Wild Goose, very much in character as Seattle detective Lon McQ also lives on a boat. The boat that McQ lives on supposedly also belonged to John Wayne. The Wild Goose was berthed at the Seattle Yacht Club during filming. McQ's boat was docked at the Northlake Marina on Lake Union near the Aurora Avenue bridge. Although he had occasionally played sheriffs and law-men in his many westerns, and a federal agent in Big Jim McLain (1952), this was one of only two films in which he played a city cop. In this film, he plays a cop from Seattle. The second film, Brannigan (1975), he plays a cop from Chicago, Illinois, who travels to London, England to extradite an international fugitive. The first John Wayne film that Colleen Dewhurst appeared in was The Cowboys (1972). Although she did not share any scenes with Duke in that film, she left a positive impression on him, and he promised her they would work together in the future. Dewhurst said, “Duke kept his word…and when McQ came up, he told John Sturges he wanted me. When we did our two scenes, he was relaxed and seemed to enjoy the work. I’m so glad I managed to bring something good into Duke’s life.” This movie was previewed at the Harvard Square Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts following a Harvard Lampoon roast for John Wayne at the event. He was presented with a replica of pawn balls called The Brass Balls Award. The 1973 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am 455 Super Duty used by John Wayne's character McQ in the film is a rare car with only 252 being made that model year, in the rarest Brewster Green color. John Wayne's screen-used badge, holster, and pistol are on display at the John Wayne: An American Experience Museum. #JohnWayne #JohnWayneExperience #JohnWayneTrivia
