Throughout my journey of infertility, the Theotokos icon has given me much consolation, reminding me of the dignity and beauty of my vocation as a woman, as a God-bearer. ⁣ ⁣ It’s an honor to share my own version of this icon with you. ⁣ ⁣ Mary’s outer garment is in red, which is typically associated in Christian art with the blood of Christ, symbolizing her salvific role in bringing our Redeemer into the world. Red is also used to recognize her sacrificial life as the Mother of God. ⁣ ⁣ The roses on her cloak further remind us of the redemptive suffering she endured throughout her Motherhood, and the beauty we are all called to bring forth amidst the thorns of our lives. ⁣ ⁣ The letters “MP OV” are an abbreviation for "ΜΗΤΗΡ ΘΕΟΥ” (Mē̂tēr Theou), which translates to "Mother of God" in Greek. ⁣ ⁣ While I painted this image with the intention of blessing women who are also struggling with infertility, I hope you gift it to any woman in your life that needs encouragement in her vocation, whether that be an overwhelmed mother of littles, a woman patiently waiting for her spouse, a friend struggling with her self worth, or your married friend who is waiting to conceive, or conceive again. ⁣ ⁣ Since this week is infertility awareness week, I have included some prayers in the slides of this post.
