“It is finished.” (John 19:30) On Good Friday, the Cross stands at the center of history. What appears to be utter defeat—the brutal death of a man on a Roman instrument of torture—is in fact the moment of cosmic victory. As Bishop Robert Barron often teaches, we must resist the temptation to sanitize the Cross. This is not a quaint religious symbol. It is the full display of God’s love, poured out to the last drop. Jesus does not evade suffering—He steps directly into it, and in doing so, transforms it. Good Friday unveils the deepest mystery: God conquers not by crushing His enemies, but by absorbing evil in love. In Christ’s broken body, we see the answer to sin—not vengeance, but mercy. Not power as the world defines it, but the power of self-emptying love. This is not sentimentality. This is the heart of the Gospel. The Cross is the throne of the true King. And from it, He draws all people to Himself—not by coercion, but by the magnetism of divine love. So today, don’t rush to Easter. Linger at the foot of the Cross. Be still. Be struck. Be changed. Because what happened on Calvary is not just a moment in time—it is the very axis upon which the whole world turns.
