When Herman Miller asked Yves Béhar to design an affordable chair with top-notch ergonomic support, he looked to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco for inspiration. He found it in the bridge's suspension. Béhar designed the Sayl Chair with a signature "Y" suspension tower which supports an unframed 3D back that uses less material (including ocean-bound plastic) but still delivers high-quality ergonomic support. Sayl, which launched in 2010, won acclaim for its innovative approach and its use of "the best for the most for the least," an Eames tenet. It's proof that beauty, engineering, and sustainability can work in harmony. That harmony is a signature of Béhar's work. Raised in Switzerland by a modernist German mother and an expressive Turkish father, he says he always tries to marry utility and beauty. As founder of fuseproject, he's worked on everything from the Snoo robotic bassinet to the Tile tracking device. Béhar's award-winning work for Herman Miller also includes the 2007 Leaf Lamp, which harnessed then state-of-the-art LEDs and marked a significant moment in Herman Miller's pursuit of environmentally friendly design solutions.
