Herman Miller’s relationship with Berlin-based Studio 7.5 has been particularly fruitful, starting with the Mirra Chair in 2003 and extending to other projects, including the award-winning Setu, Mirra, Mirra 2 (the lowest-carbon high-performance work chair to win both design and ergonomic awards), Cosm, and Zeph. While they’ve done other types of products, including the Polygon Wire Table and the Metaform portfolio, they find designing chairs particularly rewarding. “We define not only how the chair looks but how it performs,” says Carola Zwick, one member of the Studio 7.5 team. The chairs are engineered “to allow people to assume roles similar to that of a craftsman in his shop, surrounded by everything he or she needs to be most productive,” Zwick explains. The firm believes that geometry is the designer’s most powerful tool because it can solve so many kinds of problems, including efficient use of materials. “We believe that as designers we should exhaust all options of geometry before adding a different material to a design,” says Zwick. “This helps us to look very closely at the amount of material and only use as much as is minimally needed.” Learn more at the link in our bio.
